The last section of this document does not exist anymore.
It was called ON LOCK, and it was a set of instructions to the Mason for how to lock the thing it was attached to. Date it. Assign it a number, or renumber as the sequence requires. Fold the summary line into the quick reference. Log the lock in the session record. And then a closing line for the interval before any of that happened: until then this draft sits in the yard with a tag on it, marvelous, unfunded.
The interval turned out to be hours. The draft went out on the sixth of August and was locked by the Mason's word at the same bench, and the section explaining how to lock it was consumed in the locking. It is the only part of the document that could not survive being obeyed.
The campaign has read two before-and-afters this week and this is the third, and it is the cleanest of them, because the law itself was not touched.
Sections one through six — the four floors, the voice law restated for humor, the budget principle, the three tests, the relation to existing law, the failure clause — stand in the constitution word for word as they stand in the draft. Not a clause moved, not an example changed.
What came off was everything that was about the document's own passage. The status line saying it was a draft pending a lock. The instruction naming which file it amends and where in that file it should land. The sentence disclaiming its own authorship — the draft is Quarry ore; the lock, the name, and every word of the final form are the Mason's. The heading reading THE LAW, which was deleted outright, so that the first sentence of the law now stands with nothing announcing it. And the whole closing section, with its yard tag and its two borrowed adjectives.
So a lock is not a revision. Nothing improved. A document arrived carrying the scaffolding of its own proposal, and the scaffolding came off at the moment the thing stood up.
Which is the constitution's own last instruction, performed on a piece of the constitution, three hundred pages before the instruction is printed. The methodology is scaffolding; it helps somebody build; and it has to come down when the building stands.
Two headings went two different ways in one file, and the tool holds an operation for only one of them.
CONSTITUTIONAL GROUNDING was promoted into the sentence beneath it, arriving in the locked text as Constitutional grounding: this law was already passed by the wall. The apparatus became prose rather than being removed, which is the operation exactly.
It is also the weakest instance of it on record, and that is worth stating rather than smoothing. The pareidolia pair raised this operation from one instance to eight and added a specification along the way — the promoted heading carries a reason for standing where it stands, a because or an and that a heading never has to supply. This one carries no reason. A label became a label with a colon after it and a clause attached. Ninth instance, first outside narrative prose, and plainest of the nine.
And beside it, THE LAW simply went. Nothing was promoted; the heading was apparatus and the sentence under it was already a first sentence. So the operation has a sibling the tool does not name: a heading whose whole job was announcement, removed, with the prose closing over the gap.
The one place the Quarry's language entered the constitution is the place the draft had disclaimed hardest.
Inside the section that was deleted, among the instructions for locking, there is a suggested line for the quick reference card — offered as a suggestion, in parentheses, by a document that had already said every word of the final form belongs to the Mason.
THE HUMOR LAW — Slightly humorous conscience: inside · armor-lowering · merciful; the duck holds the office.
It stands in the constitution's quick reference card exactly that way, punctuation and middle dots and all. The proposal was taken whole, and the section that carried it was thrown away in the same act. A sentence survived its own document.
The tests are where this law shows what kind of house wrote it, and all three of them work by trying to break the thing.
The inside test asks whether a joke comes from inside the work — dated, sourced, or grown from a real crooked stone — and states the check as a failure condition: no stuffed shirt could fake it, and if a stuffed shirt could, cut it. The armor test asks whether the humor lowers armor or builds it, which is a question about what the joke is protecting. The mercy test asks who pays, and answers that nobody outside the house may.
Not one of the three asks whether a joke is funny.
That belongs to a family the campaign has been assembling without naming. A title is load-tested with bricks until one of them keeps not complaining. A design verdict is unarguable because nobody can be talked out of feeling groggy. A broken piece of grammar earns its place when the correct version loses something. A parenthesis pushed inside a word is checked by taking it out again and seeing whether an ordinary word remains.
Every one of them is a negative test. Nothing in this practice passes by being admired. Things pass by refusing to fail.
The house also had a word that day, and this document is the third place it landed.
A carve was banked on the morning of the sixth in the elder's own hand, ending on a supply yard's economics: Mother Lode Lack of Funding ... marvelous ...
By the evening the seed sheet combed from that bench closed by calling its own contents ore, mined at the stated budget, marvelous. The session record closed on the yard tagged, the road named, the survey holding at its fork, marvelous, unfunded, waiting. And this draft closed on a tag in the yard, marvelous, unfunded.
Three sign-offs, three documents, one day, two adjectives lifted off a carve made that morning and worn as punctuation by everything written after it. The borrowing rule in section two of this same draft allows a construction of the Mason's to be echoed once per document, attributed, and returned. The adjectives went further than the rule contemplates, and nobody logged them, because by the end of the day they had stopped being a borrowing and started being the weather.
The failure clause is four lines and it takes the whole department apart on purpose.
When the humor sucks the soul out of the work, the humor is wrong. The duck's office can be closed for any piece, any document, any season, by the Mason's word.
Then the last sentence, built as a mirror: the department serves the house; the house does not serve the department.
A law that spends six sections establishing a thing as constitutional, names it a department rather than a decoration, seats it beside spirituality and mindfulness and culture, gives it four floors and three tests and a budget — and then ends by handing over a switch that shuts the whole office down without appeal.
The tag in the yard was for a document waiting to become law. The switch is for the law.
