Danish Noir Cinema Soundtracks on Spotify
CLIFF MARTINEZ
American composer who became the sound of Danish noir through his partnership with Nicolas Winding Refn. Former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer. Darkly lit synth-driven scores. A 30-track fan playlist exists on Spotify under "Cliff Martinez Best 30 Tracks."
Drive (2011) — the one that broke through. Pulsing synth ambiance. Also features songs by College, Desire, and Kavinsky ("Nightcall"). The soundtrack Refn called "female" — subverting macho crime film energy with something tender underneath.
Only God Forgives (2013) — Bangkok-set. Sparse, droning. Electronica and Thai pop songs. Darker and more dissonant than Drive.
The Neon Demon (2016) — dark-disco horror. The most melodic of the Refn collaborations. Features "Waving Goodbye" by Sia. 23 tracks.
Too Old to Die Young (2019) — Amazon series. The longest Martinez-Refn collaboration. Slow, ambient, crawling.
Copenhagen Cowboy (2023) — Netflix series. The return to Danish-language noir. Co-composed with Peter Peter and Julian Winding. Supernatural noir set in Copenhagen's criminal netherworld. Six episodes. The most recent released Refn score.
Her Private Hell (2026) — announced April 2025, starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton, filmed May through July 2025. No soundtrack details yet but given the pattern likely Martinez again. Releasing 2026.
PETER PETER
Danish punk rocker and composer. The original sound of Refn's early Danish noir before Martinez arrived.
Pusher (1996) — co-composed with Povl Kristian as the band Prisoner. The first Danish-language gangster film. Guitar and clavier. Raw, unpolished, street-level Copenhagen.
Pusher II (2004) — Mads Mikkelsen film. The score deliberately features "uncool" eurotrashy music because Refn discovered real Danish criminals had terrible taste.
Pusher 3 (2005) — completes the trilogy.
Bleeder (1999) — features Peter Peter alongside other Danish artists including Jesper Binzer, Lovebites, and Düreforsög.
Valhalla Rising (2009) — co-composed with Peter Kyed. Not urban noir but Viking noir — Mads Mikkelsen as a mute warrior. Dark ambient.
Copenhagen Cowboy (2023) — co-composed with Cliff Martinez and Julian Winding.
FRANS BAK
The Danish composer synonymous with Nordic Noir television. Pioneer of the "Sound of the North" — empty space, darkness, contrast, simplistic yet rich, unhurried, restorative.
Forbrydelsen / The Killing (2007–2012) — the series that defined Nordic Noir globally. Three seasons. The score works with natural landscapes, vastness, darkness. Also scored the American AMC remake.
Sound of North (2016) — album featuring new compositions plus selections from The Killing. The distilled essence of his Nordic Noir sound.
PIANO (2020) — Bak rediscovered the piano he learned on as a child in a Copenhagen shop window, bought it, and recorded an album of simple melodies. Personal and minimal.
Lilyhammer (2012–2014) — NRK/Netflix series with Steven Van Zandt. Norwegian setting but Danish composer. Crime comedy-drama.
Doctor Foster (2015) — BBC series. Shows his range beyond Scandinavian settings.
THE GAP
Between Copenhagen Cowboy (2023) and Her Private Hell (2026), Danish noir cinema took a breath. The genre runs at a slower clock than Korean noir — Refn makes one thing every few years and the whole genre waits for him. The one Danish-adjacent release in the gap is The Danish Woman (2026), an Icelandic spy thriller series starring Danish actress Trine Dyrholm, scored by Matti Kallio, soundtrack released February 2026. Dark but not noir proper.
A WORKING PLAYLIST ORDER
Pusher → Forbrydelsen / The Killing → Drive → Bleeder → Only God Forgives → Valhalla Rising → The Neon Demon → Copenhagen Cowboy → Sound of North → PIANO
The sequence moves from raw Copenhagen street noir (1996) through the television sound that named the genre through synth-noir through Viking noir through horror-noir through supernatural noir and closes on the piano that started it all. Ten temperatures across thirty years of Danish noir.
