MILES DAVIS
An American who defined the sound of French noir in a single night. Improvised the entire score while watching the film projected on a studio wall, December 4, 1957, 10 PM to 5 AM. The loneliest trumpet sound you will ever hear.
Ascenseur pour l'échafaud / Elevator to the Gallows (1958) — Louis Malle's debut. The score that preceded and prefigured Kind of Blue. Modal jazz as film noir. "Générique" is where it starts. On Spotify as a full album. The sketchbook that led to the masterpiece.
FRANÇOIS DE ROUBAIX
The composer of the Melville-Delon holy trinity. Minimal, electronic organ riffs lurking in foreground and background. Jazz muted trumpet fused with early electronics. Died at 36 in a diving accident. Everything he left behind is essential.
Le Samouraï (1967) — Alain Delon as the hitman with samurai instincts. The score is tension and cocktail organ and foreboding. The electric organ riff is the character's heartbeat. Search "Le Samouraï François de Roubaix" on Spotify — individual tracks available.
Les Aventuriers (1967) — lighter, more romantic, still dark underneath.
Le Vieux Fusil (1975) — his last major score. War grief and revenge.
Search his name on Spotify — compilations of his film work exist and are worth the full listen. He scored over fifty films in twelve years.
MARTIAL SOLAL
French jazz pianist. Played with Django Reinhardt and Sidney Bechet. The score that launched the French New Wave.
À bout de souffle / Breathless (1960) — Godard's debut. Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. The score is variations on a five-note theme — nimble, hurried, matching the film's pace. 11 tracks on Spotify.
ERIC DEMARSAN
One score. The finest combination of underworld existentialism, coldblooded chic, and crime jazz ever recorded.
Le Cercle Rouge (1970) — Melville again. Alain Delon, Yves Montand, Bourvil. The score draws from the Modern Jazz Quartet's orchestral spirit, abstraction, and minimalism. A suspenseful and hypnotizing landscape. Search "Eric Demarsan Le Cercle Rouge" on Spotify — the theme track is available.
ALEXANDRE DESPLAT
The modern heir to the French masters. Oscar winner. Jacques Audiard's primary composer across four films.
Un Prophète / A Prophet (2009) — Audiard's prison noir. Tahar Rahim's breakout. The score examines crime and morality. On Spotify as a full album.
De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté / The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) — Audiard's remake of Fingers. Desplat won the Silver Bear at Berlin.
Sur mes lèvres / Read My Lips (2001) — Audiard's first collaboration with Desplat. A deaf secretary and an ex-convict.
Alexandre Desplat/Jacques Audiard (2006) — a compilation album of their work together. 21 tracks on Spotify.
NICOLAS JAAR
Chilean-American electronic producer. Made his film scoring debut with Audiard.
Dheepan (2015) — Palme d'Or winner. A Tamil soldier posing as a family man in a Parisian housing project. Jaar's electronic textures against immigrant noir.
ASSASSIN + DJ CUT KILLER
French hardcore rap as banlieue noir soundtrack.
La Haine (1995) — Mathieu Kassovitz. Vincent Cassel. Three young men, one night, one lost police revolver. Not a traditional score — the soundtrack is Bob Marley, Isaac Hayes, Beastie Boys, NTM, and Assassin's "Nique la Police." A 24K-save fan playlist on Spotify reconstructs the full soundtrack. Search "Soundtrack: La Haine (1995)."
CLÉMENT DUCOL + CAMILLE
Songwriter and composer duo. The most recent French noir sound.
Emilia Pérez (2024) — Audiard's genre-defying musical noir about a Mexican drug trafficker's transition. 16 original songs. Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón. Grand Prix at Cannes 2024. Soundtrack on Spotify.
ANATOMY OF A FALL (2023)
Justine Triet's Palme d'Or winner. No credited composer — music supervisor Thibault Deboaisne selected needle-drops. The film uses silence as its primary sound design. The one musical moment that matters: 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P." blasting from a stereo on the day a man dies. Not a score film but a noir that proves the absence of score can be the darkest sound of all.
THE GAP — 2023 to 2026
French noir cinema did not stop but the scored noir did thin. Anatomy of a Fall (2023) used no original score. Emilia Pérez (2024) was a musical, not a traditional score. No major French noir film score emerged in 2025. Audiard has not announced a follow-up. Desplat continues scoring internationally but not French noir specifically. The genre is between waves.
A WORKING PLAYLIST ORDER
Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Miles Davis) → À bout de souffle (Martial Solal) → Le Samouraï (François de Roubaix) → Le Cercle Rouge (Eric Demarsan) → La Haine (Assassin / various) → The Beat That My Heart Skipped (Alexandre Desplat) → Un Prophète (Alexandre Desplat) → Dheepan (Nicolas Jaar) → Emilia Pérez (Clément Ducol + Camille)
The sequence moves from improvised jazz noir (1957) through New Wave noir through Melville's coldblooded chic through banlieue noir through modern prison noir through immigrant noir through musical noir. Sixty-seven years of French darkness in nine temperatures. The trumpet that started it all was playing in a studio at 2 AM in Paris with champagne on the console and Jeanne Moreau in the room.
