An Artist, a Journalist…

Words / 2024 Variety

An Artist, a Journalist, and Many Warriors Who Taught Us Something Human About War And Genocide. We understand how difficult it can be to talk about the impact. These individuals are a testament to the severe effects.

One such individual was James R. O'Neill, an Irish-born artist-correspondent who worked for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper during the American Civil War in the War's Western theater. O'Neill's sketches and reports depicted the harsh realities of War in Oklahoma, southern Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas.

It is saddening that O'Neill lost his life near Fort Baxter, Kansas, when a band of Quantrill's Raiders attacked the fort in October 1863. He is the only known artist to have been killed during the Civil War, and his bravery and sacrifice remain a testament to the importance of documenting the realities of War.

Another notable individual was Frank Vizetelly, a veteran pictorial journalist who covered both the American Civil War and the Austro-Prussian War. In 1883, he traveled to northeastern Africa to cover the War in Sudan against Mahdists attempting to overthrow Anglo-Egyptian rule.

Unfortunately, Vizetelly was part of an Anglo-Egyptian force led into an ambush by treacherous guides. The Mahdi's forces defeated them, and Vizetelly was either slaughtered or subsequently massacred by the victorious Mahdi. His work as a journalist and his bravery on the battlefield served as a reminder of the risks that war correspondents face in their quest to document the truth.

It's also essential to remember the Native American warriors who fought fiercely to preserve their homelands against U.S. soldiers during various conflicts. Many Native American women and men were not in positions of formal power, but their bravery and sacrifices on the battlefield are a testament to their resilience and determination. Their impact on history remains significant today, as their stories continue to be told and their contributions are recognized.

These individuals faced the harsh realities firsthand, and it's essential to acknowledge and remember their struggles and sacrifices. Their stories remind us of the human cost and the importance of documenting its impact. Their efforts continue to inspire and inform future generations about these extremely harsh realities.
