A Beach Read Falls by the Bay: We Are Not Going Anywhere
A Puppet Theater Script in Salty-Sweet Fragments
Scene opens on a ramshackle beach setup—driftwood puppet stage, sea glass catching light, sand literally
spilling into the audience. Six weathered puppets lounge in beach chairs made from popsicle sticks. A
tattered beach umbrella casts striped shadows. Someone's left a dog-eared paperback in the sand.

Prologue: The Methodology of Waves
NARRATOR (unseen, like wind): Based on extensive research into the human condition... here is a
comprehensive assemblage of aspects that make up our approach to inventive living. Note-taking
begins... now.

Act I: Mundane Transfixions at Low Tide
FRANCOIZ (puppet in faded Hawaiian shirt, building sandcastle): Second-person narration time! You—yes
YOU in the third row—you're about to witness technical mastery disguised as a beach day. This
sandcastle? It's actually a raw conflict zone hospital. (sandcastle collapses) See? Precision.

PENELOPE (emerges from beach bag, tangled in sunscreen and notebooks): I've been making notes about
disappearances! First, my favorite flip-flop. Then, three pencils. Finally... (dramatic pause) ...my ability to
distinguish between comedy and tragedy!

(MUNDANE TRANSFIXION: All puppets freeze, watching a single grain of sand fall from Penelope's elbow.
Ten seconds of complete silence. Everyone holds their breath.)

BERTRAND (doing beach yoga, falls over): TONAL SHIFT ALERT! (springs up) From high drama... (strikes
tragic pose) ...to screwball comedy of manners! (chases beach ball off stage)

CONSTANCE (reading romance novel upside-down): Darlings, I'm having an adult perspective on my
youthful moments. Remember when we thought jellyfish were just angry water balloons? (all puppets nod
sagely)

HIGH DRAMA MOMENT

SHANNON (suddenly standing on cooler, spotlight, wind machine): EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE? (voice
breaking) THIS COOLER CONTAINS THE LAST WORDS MY MOTHER EVER SPOKE! (opens cooler
dramatically) "Don't forget... the ice!" (collapses sobbing)

FRANCOIZ (kneeling beside her): Shannon... Shannon, my darling... the ice... it never melts when preserved
in memory!
SCREWBALL COMEDY INTERLUDE - The Manner of Applying Sunscreen

BERTRAND (with British accent): I say, Constance, might I trouble you for the SPF 50?

CONSTANCE (curtseying): But of course, Lord Bertrand. (extends sunscreen with pinky out)

BERTRAND: After you, naturally.

CONSTANCE: Oh no, I couldn't possibly—

BERTRAND: I insist!

CONSTANCE: But proper etiquette demands—

(They begin an elaborate dance of politeness, bowing and curtseying while trying to hand sunscreen back
and forth, eventually getting tangled in an increasingly complex choreography)

PENELOPE (watching): This is... magnificent.

THIERRY (speaking from inside beach umbrella): From beyond the beach blanket, I offer additional layers
of intimacy! Death is just snorkeling in deeper waters, really.

Act II: Years-Long Arcs in Beach Time
Lighting shifts—sunrise, noon, sunset, rapidly cycling. Puppets age through incremental costume changes:
sun hats accumulate, sunglasses crack, beach wear fades.

FRANCOIZ: Time has this obsession with our beach reads. Watch how past influences present— (pulls out
photo album, sand pours out)

PENELOPE (now wearing seaweed boa): Natural evolution in real time! I put away my doctor credentials,
brought them back, now they're covered in barnacles!

TONAL SHIFT (sign held up by crab puppet)

BERTRAND: PHILOSOPHICAL INTERLUDE! (all puppets freeze) What if Ivy League insider knowledge
could be written in sand?

ALL PUPPETS (building elaborate sand sculpture):

Quotable!
Razor-edged!

Capturing more in one sentence than bestsellers!
While devastated after praises!
Sculpture immediately washed away by wave sound effect

CONSTANCE: That's the lightness of touch when it floats uncontrolled!

Act III: The Comprehensive Beach Methodology
Stage transforms—beach chairs rearrange into therapy circle

SHANNON: Let's discuss our preoccupations! (pulls out beach ball labeled "TIME AND MEMORY")

THIERRY: Toss it here! From my deceased perspective, I see how B Otto and Brrd Roots blend macabre
with practical!

Beach ball bounces between puppets, each adding a "methodology aspect" with each catch:

FRANCOIZ: "Drawing from personal incidences!" (catch)

PENELOPE: "Inspired by loss of kindred spirits!" (catch)

BERTRAND: "Breezy AND expansive!" (drops ball, chases it)

CONSTANCE: "Teaching what silence means!" (catches with eyes closed)

SHANNON: "Lovably imperfect banter with emotional authenticity!" (catch)

THIERRY: "Deeply flawed and wounded even when likable!" (ball passes through him)

Act IV: High Drama Meets Beach Farce
Storm clouds gather—made of cotton candy

PENELOPE (standing on lifeguard chair): ATTENTION! We're having a coming-of-age crisis in reverse!
Also, has anyone seen my other flip-flop?

FRANCOIZ (dramatically): In this ramshackle construct we call joy land, combining earth's natural history
with—

BERTRAND (interrupting with beach whistle): SHARK! No wait—it's just emotional depth!

All puppets scream-laugh—a tonal shift embodied

CONSTANCE (calmly applying sunblock): This is why critics describe us as both heartbreaking AND oddly
funny. We're a walking beach read paradox!

Act V: Fragments Washing Ashore
Puppets gather as tide comes in (blue fabric rippling)
SHANNON: Every phenomenal to commonplace person becomes an artist here. Even you, half-buried
beach chair!

THIERRY (now just a voice in a conch shell): Listen—wet and dry humor mixing like sand in your
sandwich!

FRANCOIZ: We've been self-help literature turned upside down with water on fire!

PENELOPE: Prestigious venues? (gestures at rickety puppet stage) This ramshackle paradise is our Yale!

BERTRAND (finding message in bottle): It says... "Underlying tenderness for all created characters."

CONSTANCE: Of course it does. We're a field guide to living-beinghood, after all.

All puppets form a conga line

ALL PUPPETS (singing to the tune of waves, not copyrighted): We are fragments on the shore, Absurd,
surreal, and so much more, From grief to joy, we shift and play, We are not going anywhere today!

Epilogue: The Space Between Episodes
Puppets settle back in beach chairs as sun sets

FRANCOIZ (to audience): You've been our beach read all along. Close observation, emotional resonance,
layered profundity in the spaces between—

PENELOPE: Between the flip-flop and its mate...

BERTRAND: Between the tragedy and the punchline...

CONSTANCE: Between youth and wisdom...

SHANNON: Between loss and hope...

THIERRY: Between here and wherever...

ALL: We. Are. Not. Going. ANYWHERE!

Puppets freeze in tableau—some mid-laugh, some mid-cry, some mid-dance. Beach umbrella slowly spins.
A real beach read paperback falls from the sky. Lights fade to the sound of waves and distant laughter.

END

Director's Beach Notes:

Puppets should have sand physically falling from them throughout
Use actual beach reads as props—romance novels, thrillers, literary fiction

Tonal shifts should be marked by beach whistle, air horn, or seagull screech

Keep one puppet always searching for something lost (flip-flop, meaning, youth)

Background should include subtle references to conflict zones/hospitals made from beach materials

Every "profound" moment should be immediately undercut by something absurd (seagull stealing
snacks, beach ball to face, etc.)

Maintain "wet and dry humor"—literally spray water during emotional scenes

The "prestigious venue" should clearly be held together with duct tape and hope

Beach Read Philosophy: This production embraces every fragment—the comprehensive assemblage
includes all aspects while maintaining the page-turning quality of a beach read. Heavy subjects float like
beach balls, profound insights wash in with the tide, and tonal shifts happen as naturally as changing into
dry clothes after an unexpected wave.
