The Most Beautiful Garbage On Earth.

Brian Otto's practice exists as a conscious alternative to human on human violence, creating a positive place for possibilities where new art becomes the ethical choice. Working from outside and indoor workspaces in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the practice spans writing, sound art, installations, and performance—what others might call Beautiful Garbage becomes physical evidence that consciousness occurred. The work also lives in paradox: tasting euphoria while swimming dark depths, peaceful calm canvases alternating with agitated expressions, obsessive compulsion, purging, letting go. When a paralyzation suddenly lifts, everything mingles—photos, words, drawings, paintings, hammered metal, carved wood, installations—becoming aromatic laments, touchable prayers, and worldly wishes for every human being's future. Premise—Staying alive. After sixty-five years of living and thirty years of making, from fashion illustration to therapeutic hospital exhibits to current multi-sensory vessel work, the practice has evolved into three primary equal parts: interpersonal relationships or how we connect, mixed-media makings, and intuitive neuro impulse ruminating thoughts becoming words or how to better understand. It may seem like precious morsels and debris but it's aRrr art, with a capital r. Ranging from hurt to help to hope. No pills or quick fixes, for certain. Wonderous processes of working through all kinds of things.
