Brrd Roots ~ Whispers of the Brook
A short play woven with tragedy, themes of morality,
love, redemption, and the eternal human struggle
Title: Whispers of the Brook
ACT I
Scene 1: The Garden
(A modest garden. Rows of kale glisten under the afternoon sun. HARRISON crouches, pulling weeds. PAUL leans casually against the wooden fence, spinning a blade of grass.)
HARRISON:
(With a grunt, as a weed snaps free)
Ever notice how pulling weeds feels like winning?
PAUL:
(Grinning)
Every damn time. It’s like—what’s that word? Sisyphean. Makes you feel classy saying it, huh?
HARRISON:
(Classy isn’t the word that comes to mind.)
But they’ll grow back. They always do.
(Pauses, looks toward the shimmering brook)
Why do we keep building on broken ground, Paul?
PAUL:
(Serious now)
Because fixing cracks takes less courage than admitting they’re there.
(The brook’s faint hum grows louder. HARRISON turns, as though hearing it for the first time.)

ACT I
Scene 2: By the Brook
(MIRIAM stands knee-deep in the brook, hands full of seaweed. HARRISON approaches hesitantly, watching her.)
MIRIAM:
(Without looking up)
We plant things, hoping they’ll grow.
But the shadows—
They spread anyway.
(Voice catches)
Greed. Droughts. What we leave behind.
HARRISON:
(Softly)
So, what do we do?
MIRIAM:
(Still, letting the water ripple around her hands)
You plant stronger things.
Things the shadows can’t choke out.
And then you trust the light to find them.
(She turns to face him. For a moment, the brook seems alive—its rhythm mirroring their breaths.)

ACT II
Scene 1: Victor’s Conflict
(VICTOR sits alone on a wooden bench, a notebook balanced on his knees. Pages empty. The brook hums faintly nearby.)
VICTOR:
Sometimes I think guilt is the only thing that keeps me moving.
(He pauses, staring at the blank pages.)
But guilt—it’s faster than I am. It always catches up.
(MIRIAM appears, her figure faint like a memory.)
MIRIAM:
(Quietly)
You lie to yourself like it’s a gift.
Softening the edges so the truth doesn’t cut too deep.
(VICTOR looks away. The brook hums louder.)

ACT II
Scene 2: Julian’s Shadow
(JULIAN stands at the brook’s edge, shoulders slumped. The light dances on the ripples, but he doesn’t notice.)
JULIAN:
(Softly, almost to himself)
They see versions of me.
Something I can’t live up to.
(Looks up, finally meeting the brook’s gaze.)
Do you see me?
Or do you see the lies I tell myself?
(The brook’s hum softens, as though waiting. JULIAN kneels, his fingers brushing the water.)
---
ACT III
Scene 1: The Storm
(The garden, now battered by rain. The brook swells, its gentle hum replaced by a roar. HARRISON struggles to protect the kale as JULIAN kneels at the water’s edge. MIRIAM stands still, her arms outstretched.)
HARRISON:
(Shouting over the storm)
We can’t save it!
MIRIAM:
(Quietly, but with force)
You plant anyway.
Because the light knows how to grow—
Even when we can’t see it.
(JULIAN, trembling, lets the water wash over his hands. The storm subsides. Silence. The brook hums softly once more.)

EPILOGUE
Scene: By the Brook, Morning Light
(HARRISON kneels, planting seeds. MIRIAM stands nearby, her hands now empty. JULIAN watches from a distance.)
HARRISON:
(To the brook)
I’ve stopped asking for perfection.
Planting feels like faith.
A ripple of grace…
MIRIAM:
(Interrupting, smiling faintly)
Even when the shadows spread faster than the light.
(The brook hums, weaving their voices together as the light grows brighter. The stage fades to black.)
