Celeste's Final Performance

Words / 2025 Variety

Hospice Saint-Vincent, Montreal
March 3, 2024, 7 PM

Celeste Tremblay, 72, adjusts five mushroom puppets on her lap. Her granddaughter MAYA (9) sits cross-legged on the hospice room floor. The chemo port in Celeste's chest catches the lamplight.

MAYA: Why are they mushrooms, Grand-maman?

CELESTE: Because mushrooms know secrets about dying.

MAYA: That's creepy.

CELESTE: That's wonderful. Watch.

She lifts the first puppet—EMMA, made from dried oyster mushrooms.

CELESTE (as Emma): I grow from dead trees. But the tree isn't gone—it's becoming me. See my gills? Each one remembers a ring of the tree's years.

MAYA: Trees don't remember.

CELESTE: Everything remembers. Your body remembers how to heal cuts. Water remembers how to freeze. Mushrooms remember how to turn death into life.

She picks up MAUD, made of shelf fungi.

CELESTE (as Maud): Under the ground, we're all connected. One organism, thirty cubic miles wide. When one tree is sick, we feed it through the roots. When one dies, we share its stories with the forest.

MAYA: How?

CELESTE: Chemistry. But also magic. Same thing really.

Maya's mother JULIE enters.

JULIE: Maya, we should let Grand-maman rest.

CELESTE: Five more minutes. I'm showing her the network.

JULIE: Mom—

CELESTE: I need her to understand. Before.

Julie sits. Celeste continues with PEDER, a tiny inkcap puppet.

CELESTE (as Peder): I dissolve myself into black ink when I'm done. But the ink carries spores. New life.

MAYA: Why do you dissolve?

CELESTE (as herself): To make room. Can't have new things if old things won't leave.

Her hand shakes. The puppet drops.

MAYA: Grand-maman?

CELESTE: Just tired. Here—you try.

Maya picks up LIZZ, made of bioluminescent jack-o'-lantern mushrooms that actually glow faintly.

MAYA (as Lizz): I glow in the dark!

CELESTE: Why do you glow, Lizz?

MAYA (thinking): To... to show the way?

CELESTE: Perfect. Death isn't darkness. It's transformation into light.

She guides Maya to pick up the last puppet, CÉLESTE—made of white destroying angel mushrooms.

CELESTE: Careful with that one. She's poison.

MAYA: Why make a poison puppet?

CELESTE: Because poison is medicine in different doses. Because dangerous things can be beautiful. Because I wanted to name a mushroom after myself and the pretty ones were taken.

Maya laughs.

JULIE: Mom, you can't name mushrooms after yourself.

CELESTE: I can name puppets whatever I want. When I die—

JULIE: Mom—

CELESTE: When I die, these puppets go to Maya. The whole network.

MAYA: I don't want them. I want you.

CELESTE: You get both. I'll be in the puppets. In the stories. In the ground feeding real mushrooms. In the molecules cycling through. Forever part of the network.

She takes all five puppets and shows Maya how to connect them with silver thread.

CELESTE: See? Everything connects. Emma feeds Maud. Maud supports Peder. Peder makes soil for Lizz. Lizz lights the way for Céleste. And Céleste—

MAYA: What does Céleste do?

CELESTE: She teaches little girls that dying is just another way of growing.

The hospice nurse knocks.

NURSE: Medication time, Mrs. Tremblay.

CELESTE: In a moment. Maya, remember—mushrooms are never alone. Even when you can't see it, the network is there. Underground. Connecting everything.

MAYA: Will you be in the network?

CELESTE: I already am. We all are. Death just makes it visible.

She hands Maya the connected puppets.

CELESTE: Practice the show. Next week you can perform it for me.

MAYA: Promise?

Celeste touches her chemo port, then Maya's cheek.

CELESTE: I promise you'll perform it. Whether I'm in this bed or in the network.

---

One Week Later

Maya stands before Celeste's bed. Celeste's breathing is shallow. Julie holds her mother's hand.

MAYA: I practiced, Grand-maman.

She holds up the mushroom puppets, connected by silver thread. Begins the show.

MAYA (as Emma): Death here is never the end of anything...

Celeste's eyes flutter open, focusing on the puppets.

MAYA (as Maud): Only transformation. The network remembers everything...

Celeste mouths along with words she taught.

MAYA (as Céleste): Every ending feeds a new beginning.

Celeste closes her eyes. Smiles. The monitors continue their quiet rhythm.

Epilogue

Mount Royal Cemetery. April.

Maya kneels by fresh earth, pressing an oyster mushroom spawn brick into the soil.

MAYA: For the network, Grand-maman.

The mushroom puppets sit in her backpack, still connected by silver thread. By September, oyster mushrooms will fruit from the grave. Maya will harvest them, dry them, make new puppets.

The network continues.
