Eight Hours
Mira tests VR for a startup in SoMa. Eight hours a day with a headset on. Blue explosions get a 7. Sparklers get a 9. Gold discs floating over virtual grass get a 10.
She's thirty-two. Theater degree. This is what she's doing.
Her boyfriend Cal says: "That job is weird."
"Pays rent."
"Barely."
"Still pays it."
Today's build is a virtual meadow. Gold grass. Blue explosions in the distance. Music. Piped-in smells.
Twenty minutes in she feels sick. Takes off the headset.
Her manager Devon: "You okay?"
"Dizzy."
"Can you go back in? We need full feedback."
She goes back in. Stays the full time. Rates it 8. Writes: "Successfully evokes wonder. Minor motion sickness."
After work she meets Cal. He makes her coffee. She drinks it looking at her phone.
"Reading about work?"
"Yeah."
"You should quit."
"And do what?"
He doesn't answer.
Goes home. Roommate Jen is in VR. Has been for three hours.
"Jen."
Nothing.
"Jen!"
Jen takes off the headset. "What?"
"You've been in there for hours."
"So?"
Next day she tests a new build. Faces dissolve into blue light. Portals. You reach through and touch data. Pretty light.
Devon: "What'd you think?"
"It's fine."
Writes in the form: "Innovative. 9/10."
Cal gets quieter. Stops arguing about her job. Just watches TV when she gets home. They eat dinner. Don't talk much.
Jen is in VR more. Six hours now. Forgets to eat sometimes.
Mira tests more builds. Gold grass and blue sky. Nothing else. Stays in for two hours. Forgets to check her phone.
Takes it off. Office is dark. Everyone left.
Her phone: twenty messages. Doesn't check them.
Sits there. Looks at the headset.
Puts it back on.
Cal stops coming over some nights. Says he's at his friend's. Mira says okay. Doesn't ask questions.
Jen stops showering. Mira can smell it but doesn't say anything. Jen pays rent late. Mira covers it.
Work expands. Mira trains new testers. Shows them the headset.
"Just let it happen," she says.
They put on the headsets.
Devon gives her a raise. "You're essential."
"Thanks."
"You look tired."
"I'm fine."
She tests safaris. Fantasies. Meadows. Oceans. All pretty. All controlled. All empty.
Her mother visits. Comes to the office without calling first.
Sees twenty people in headsets.
"This is it?"
"Yeah."
Her mother doesn't say anything. Just watches for a while.
They go to lunch. Talk about Mira's sister. Weather. Mother's garden.
At the end her mother just looks at her. Doesn't ask if she's happy. Just looks.
"I should go," Mira says.
"Okay."
They hug. Mother looks worried.
Mira goes back to work. Puts on the headset.
Cal shows up less. Maybe once a week. They don't fight. Just exist in the same space for a bit then he leaves.
Jen is in VR eight hours now. More. Mira doesn't track it.
Mira's mother calls twice a week. Mira doesn't answer. Mother leaves voicemails. "Just checking in. Call me back." Mira doesn't call back. Mother keeps calling anyway.
Sister texts: "Mom is worried."
Mira texts back: "I'm fine."
Sister: "Are you?"
Mira doesn't respond.
Goes to work. Tests. Devon asks less if she's okay. Just takes her feedback. She's their best tester. Stays in longer than anyone else. Rates everything. Never complains.
She tests a build for four hours. Forgets what time it is. Takes it off. Office is empty.
Phone is dead. Forgot to charge it.
Goes home. Jen is asleep on the couch. Headset still on. Mira doesn't wake her.
Makes ramen. Eats it looking at nothing.
Cal texts: "You around?"
Mira: "Yeah."
Cal: "Can I come over?"
Mira: "Sure."
He comes over. They watch TV. He leaves after an hour. Says "See you" at the door. Mira says "Okay."
Next week Jen's VR subscription gets canceled. She forgot to pay. She cries about it. Mira gives her money to renew it. Jen stops crying. Goes back in.
Mira's mother keeps calling. Leaves the same voicemails. "Just checking in."
Sister texts: "Can you please just call Mom back?"
Mira texts: "I will."
Doesn't.
Work is the same. Tests builds. Rates wonder. Writes feedback. Devon says she's doing great. Gives her more builds to test.
She tests one for three hours. Then four. Then loses track.
Takes it off. Dark office. Empty.
Her phone has thirty messages. Doesn't look.
Charges it. Goes home.
Jen is in VR. Cal isn't there. Apartment is quiet except for Jen's breathing.
Mira makes toast. Eats it. Sits on the couch.
Her phone buzzes. Mother calling. Doesn't answer. Buzzes again. Sister. Doesn't answer. Cal texts: "You good?"
Mira: "Yeah."
Cal: "Okay."
Next day she tests another build. Pretty. Controlled. Empty. Rates it 9.
Goes home. Jen is in VR. Cal texts asking if she wants dinner. Mira says she's tired. Cal says okay.
Mother leaves a voicemail. "Haven't heard from you in two weeks. Call me."
Mira saves it. Doesn't listen to it. Doesn't call back.
Devon asks if she can come in early tomorrow. She says yes. He says thanks. Says she's their best tester. Says they need her.
She keeps testing. Keeps showing up. Keeps putting on the headset.
Cal comes over Thursday. They watch TV. He leaves. Jen is in VR. Mother calls. Sister texts.
Mira goes to work. Tests. Comes home. Sleeps. Repeats.
Eight hours a day. Sometimes more.
Just keeps going.
To work. Into the headset. Out of the headset. Home. Sleep.
Again.
Same thing.
Every day.
Still testing.
