Field Notes from the Territory of Mending (Revised)

"A visitor's witnessing"

A man today taped his broken phone screen instead of fixing it. "Still works," he said. The crack right through his daughter's photo. This is how you handle broken things here - living with damage rather than fixing it.

This gentle archaeological attention you bring to inner experience. Like searching your texts for when things went wrong. Brushing dust off buried feelings like they're artifacts. Which they are - that fight from 2019, still radioactive. Some of you turn sorrow over in your hands. Screenshot it. Share it. Delete it. Screenshot it again.

From where I think I arrived, we had different ways. But here I'm learning about moving parallel through bewilderment. Like everyone in the grocery store avoiding eye contact but somehow synchronized. Walking next to someone in fog, both admitting you can't see ahead. The blind leading the blind, but gently.

I think about fragments. How archaeologists never see the whole civilization. How your therapy is just examining pieces. "This might have been love." "Perhaps this was trauma." Same uncertainty you bring to grief. "Is this about mom or is this about capitalism?" Never sure, but holding pieces tenderly.

When someone says "I don't understand my own sadness," others exhale. Finally, someone admitted it. Not-knowing together becomes medicine. Like AA but for everyone just trying to exist.

These aren't wisdom teachings. They're shared field notes from unmarked territory. "Day 47: Still sad." "Weather: Internal storms." Today I noticed grief has weather patterns. Sometimes joy and sorrow occupy the same moment. Laughing at TikToks while democracy crumbles. Questions without answers. Observations without conclusions.

Could this humility change everything? Could admitting we're lost be the map? Instead of literature that knows, we're creating collective wondering. Wikipedia but for feelings nobody understands. Each person adding scratched notes in margins. "Me too" scribbled everywhere.

I'm starting to suspect this gentle wondering presence makes room for healing. Or at least makes room, which might be enough. Not solving but keeping company. Saying "I'm bewildered too" and meaning it.

Maybe healing isn't finding the whole pot but learning to love the shards. Like keeping the broken mug because it still holds coffee, still holds memory.

Still learning that broken might be another word for evolved. Still discovering everyone's YouTube history is basically "how to feel less." Still witnessing the beauty of admitted confusion.
