Like Thursday
Part One: Reykjavik, March
Thermal pool before dawn. Inga losing her outline.
Found the mole yesterday. Garden. Dead but perfect. Like a toy that stopped working. Wrapped it in the cancer ward blanket—pink polyester, trying so hard to be kind.
Put it in her bag. Brought it here.
Stupid.
Water between painted columns. Fake Greece in Iceland. Her hand underwater looked like someone else's dinner.
"Your bag," Björn said. "Something."
Opened it. The mole twitched. Paw curled like remembering dirt.
Dead things don't remember.
This one did.
Part Two: Toronto, October
Mother on the doorstep with a shoebox.
"Seven months, Mom. Things don't stay—"
"This did."
Kitchen table. Anna opened the box. Mole wrapped in that pink hospital cloth. Moving. Not breathing though. Warm like a mistake.
"The shadow's back. On the scan."
"I know." Three jokes in one phone call. That's how Anna knew.
Touched the mole. Felt like Thursday. Like wrong temperature. Like that moment when you forget your own name.
"In Iceland, in the water, I came apart. And this thing started—" Mother stopped. "I think I'm turning into something else."
"Mom—"
"Not dying. Changing shape."
Lake Ontario. October cold. Mother walked straight in, clothes and all. The mole in her hands.
Let it go in the gray water.
It sank. Or swam down. Or became water. Hard to tell.
"There," Mother said.
Nothing there. Just ripples. But also—something. Moving under. The way thoughts move under thinking.
They stood freezing. Laughed because what else. Dead mole from Iceland. Cancer back. Standing in a lake believing in impossible shit.
Drove home soaked. The pink fleece empty between them on the seat. Still warm though. Still humming with whatever.
That night: Mother in the garden, digging.
"Mom?"
"Making room."
"For?"
No answer. Hands in dirt. The pink fleece next to her, holding nothing. Holding everything.
Anna watched from the window. Her mother digging in darkness. Looking for something. Or making space for something. Or becoming the space.
The fleece so pink it glowed.
