Looking at the Looker ~ A Theatrical Performance

Words / 2025 Variety

( Ideas, Production Development, and Dialogue )

Core Concept
Transform audience's perception of perception itself through carbonated movements and fragmented mirrors where five performers become thoughts bouncing pinball-style between micro and macro realities until everyone's asking WHO'S LOOKING?

Character Assignments & Movement Qualities

Yves - The Fragment Collector
- Moves in stutters, stops, sudden pivots
- Carries broken mirrors, prisms, magnifying glasses
- Sound signature: crack crack crack (knuckles, ice, breaking)
- Costume: Layers that can fragment/separate/recombine

Alain - The Zoomer (Micro↔Macro)
- Alternates between tiny precise movements and huge expansive gestures
- Physical accordion playing with body
- Creates scale distortions using perspective
- Costume: Telescoping elements, expandable fabrics

Elizabeth - The Questioner/Looker
- Always watching others, then suddenly aware of being watched
- Direct eye contact with audience members
- Carries notebooks, writes in air
- Costume: Covered in eyes/eye imagery that can open/close

Laurent - The Fog/Confusion/Clarity
- Moves between crystalline precision and complete dissolution
- Uses fabric/scarves to create visual fog
- Sound: whispers that overlap into white noise
- Costume: Translucent layers, opacity shifts

Jun - The Synesthetic Translator
- Embodies sensory crossing: "tastes" movements, "hears" colors
- Creates unexpected connections between performers
- Bridge between inside/outside spaces
- Costume: LED strips that respond to sound/movement

Spatial Design & Journey

Act I: Indoor Carbonation (15 minutes)
1. Begin with all performers frozen, facing different directions
2. Yves begins crack crack crack - each crack unfreezes one performer
3. Pinball movement patterns - bodies ricocheting off invisible walls
4. Elizabeth starts "looking" - creating a viral wave of awareness
5. Build to fizzing chaos where all movement becomes vibration

Threshold Moment: The Question (3 minutes)
- All freeze except Elizabeth
- Elizabeth: "WHO'S LOOKING AT THE LOOKER?"
- Audience members given hand mirrors
- Sound of glass breaking (but nothing actually breaks)

Act II: Outdoor Dissolution (20 minutes)
1. Audience finds performers at vastly different distances
2. Alain demonstrates same gesture tiny (close) and huge (far)
3. Laurent creates actual fog/mist effects if possible
4. Jun connects all through long ribbons that tangle/untangle
5. Yves collects "fragments" from audience (words, movements)

Return: Everything Becomes (12 minutes)
- Procession where walking becomes running becomes floating
- Inside space now filled with reflective surfaces
- Performers exchange positions rapidly
- Final image: all looking at audience looking at them

Technical Elements

Sound Design:
- Layer breathing with electronic glitches
- Use delay/echo to fragment spoken text
- Microphones that cut in/out randomly
- "Thought fizzing" soundscape underneath

Lighting:
- Strobe moments for fragmentation
- Follow spots that lag behind performers
- Mirrors/prisms to split light beams
- UV reveals hidden text on walls

Props & Materials:
- Handheld mirrors of various sizes
- Prisms and kaleidoscopes for audience
- Fog machines (Laurent's domain)
- LED strips/fiber optics (Jun)
- Breaking glass sound effects (no actual breaking)

Audience Interaction Protocols

1. Mirror Moments: Audience uses mirrors to catch/reflect performers
2. Question Echoes: Encouraged to whisper questions they overhear
3. Fragment Collection: Write single words on provided cards
4. Scale Play: Stand at different distances to change perspective
5. Looking Permission: Explicit invitation to stare/be stared at

Performance Notes

- Embrace glitches: if someone forgets/freezes, it's part of the piece
- NO LINEAR NARRATIVE - only accumulation of moments
- Speed changes randomly - fizzing fast to molasses slow
- "Mistakes" are revelations
- Confusion IS clarity - lean into not knowing
- Multiple things happen simultaneously always

Key Spoken Fragments (distributed among all)

- "critical eyes become prisms"
- "WHO DECIDES what's essential?"
- "trying too hard tastes metallic"
- "thoughts mid-flight—hummingbird thoughts"
- "micro→MACRO→micro→MACRO"
- "authentic urgent URGENT"
- "dizzy IS authentic when world spins"
- "seeing requires stopping and who can stop?"
- "fragments are whole"

Specific Staging Moments

The Kaleidoscope Formation:
- All five create human kaleidoscope
- Audience walks through/around
- Symmetry breaks into asymmetry repeatedly

The Pinball Symphony:
- Each performer = different pinball
- Invisible flippers operated by audience gestures
- Sound effects with each "bounce"

The Fog Confession:
- Laurent envelops everyone in fog
- Whispered confusions overlap
- Clarity comes from accepting not-knowing

Safety & Accessibility

- Clear warnings about strobe effects
- Stable pathways despite fragmented movement
- Quiet spaces for sensory regulation
- Option to observe without participating
- No actual glass/dangerous materials

Final Note

Success = audience leaves asking "who was looking at whom?" and feeling their thoughts fizz. The performance is a question, not an answer. A fragment, not a whole. Perfect in its imperfection.

...and the looker becomes the looked at becomes the looking itself...

"Looking at the Looker" - Theatrical Dialogue

Act I: Indoor Carbonation

Opening Freeze

YVES (frozen, then first crack)
crack!
Critical eyes become...

ALAIN (unfreezing)
...prisms. Splitting. White light into accusations rainbows judgments spectrums—

ELIZABETH (sharp turn to audience)
Are you looking at me looking at you looking at—

LAURENT (overlapping)
Wait. Who decides what's essential?

JUN (tasting the air)
Tuesday tastes purple in here. Anyone else getting purple?

Pinball Patterns Begin

YVES (collecting invisible fragments)
Committee of ghosts? Panel of mirrors reflecting reflecting—

ALL (bouncing off invisible walls)
ping reflecting ping reflecting ping

ELIZABETH
I see you seeing me see you but WHO—

ALAIN (tiny gesture becoming huge)
Cell becomes galaxy becomes atom becomes—zoom OUT!

JUN (to specific audience member)
Your confusion smells like cinnamon. Here, taste this sound: whistles

Building Carbonation

LAURENT (creating fog with movement)
Trying too hard tastes... tastes...

YVES
Metallic! Copper pennies on tongue!

ELIZABETH (suddenly to another performer)
Why are you wearing Sunday clothes?

JUN
Everything wants to run naked through thunderstorms—

ALL (movement becoming vibration)
Fizzing fizzing FIZZING—

ALAIN
Microscopic! Wait—COSMIC! No wait—

LAURENT
All streams lead to ocean anyway so why why WHY—

ELIZABETH
WHO'S LOOKING AT THE LOOKER?

Threshold Moment

(All freeze except Elizabeth)

ELIZABETH (holding mirror to audience)
I asked you a question. WHO. IS. LOOKING. AT. THE. LOOKER?

(Sound of glass breaking)

ELIZABETH
Good. Now we can begin breaking properly.

Act II: Outdoor Dissolution

Distance Perspectives

ALAIN (very far away)
FROM HERE YOU'RE MICROSCOPIC!

ALAIN (suddenly very close)
from here you're cosmic!

JUN (connecting with ribbons)
Distance is just another flavor. Here, taste the space between us—

LAURENT (in actual fog)
London 1952... can't see own hands thoughts feelings...

YVES (to audience)
Give me a fragment. Any fragment. A word? A worry?

(Collecting responses)

ELIZABETH (appearing suddenly)
You're still looking. I can feel your eyes like tiny suns.

Synesthetic Cascade

JUN
Attention everyone! Yves's fragments taste like—gasps—like tomorrow's anxiety!

LAURENT
But tomorrow doesn't exist when you're spinning at—

ALAIN
1000 miles per hour! Standing still is the lie!

ELIZABETH (to Laurent)
Are you the fog or is the fog you?

LAURENT
Yes.

YVES (holding collected fragments)
Someone gave me "toothache" and someone gave me "birthday" and somehow they're the same fragment?

Multiplying Perspectives

ALL (rapid position exchanges)

JUN: Your purple is my Tuesday!
ALAIN: Your micro is my macro!
LAURENT: Your clarity is my confusion!
YVES: Your whole is my fragment!
ELIZABETH: Your looking is my being looked at!

ALAIN (to audience)
Gifted person... gift or curse?

YVES
Wrapped in barbed wire ribbons!

JUN (synesthetic overload)
2.1 for birthday party—9.7 for dropped pencil—NOTHING MAKES SENSE—

ALL
EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE!

ELIZABETH
Simultaneously.

Return: Everything Becomes

Procession of Becoming

LAURENT (leading audience inside)
Walking becomes running becomes floating becomes—

YVES
Fragment becomes whole becomes fragment becomes—

ALAIN
Micro becomes macro becomes micro becomes—

JUN
Sound becomes color becomes taste becomes—

ELIZABETH
Looker becomes looked at becomes—

Hall of Mirrors Reality

(Inside, surrounded by reflections)

ELIZABETH (to her reflection)
Are you looking at me or am I looking at you?

REFLECTION (actually Laurent)
Who decides where you end and I begin?

YVES (shattering gesture)
crack crack CRACK!

JUN
Oh! The shattering tastes like recognition!

ALAIN (rapidly shifting scale)
We're quarks! We're quasars! We're questions!

Revelation Collisions

LAURENT
Confession: sometimes brain fog thick as—

ALL
London 1952!

ELIZABETH
But fog IS a kind of seeing!

YVES (throwing fragments in air)
Authentic less dizzying but dizzy IS authentic when—

ALAIN
World spins galaxy spins electron spins—

JUN (overwhelmed)
Everything vibrating at frequency of maybe!

ELIZABETH (sudden stillness)
Seeing requires stopping.

(All freeze mid-motion)

ELIZABETH
And who can stop when thoughts move lightspeed through molasses?

LAURENT
Simultaneously?

ALL (breathing together)
Paradox is home...

YVES
Contradiction is mother tongue...

JUN
Fragments...

ALL
...are whole.

Final Looking

(All face audience directly)

ELIZABETH
So. I'll ask one more time.

ALL (in round)
Who's looking at the looker becomes the looked at becomes the looking itself becomes who's looking at the looker becomes...

(Continue until lights fade, but sound continues)

---

Performance Notes:

- Surprise Moments: Elizabeth's reflection being Laurent, sudden scale shifts, fragments becoming same
- Nuances: Jun's synesthesia intensifies with emotion, Laurent exists in multiple states simultaneously
- Overlapping Rule: Never wait for complete silence—thoughts collide
- Direct Address: Break fourth wall constantly but unpredictably
- Physical Score: Every line has movement, every movement has sound
- Fragment Permission: Any line can be broken mid-word and picked up by another
- Time Fluidity: Past/present/future tense can shift within single sentence

Remember: The dialogue itself is looking at the audience looking at the dialogue...
