Instructions for Creating "Seeds of Connection" - A Theatrical Performance
Core Concept
Transform the audience's perception of growth and interconnection by creating a living, breathing performance that moves like mycelial networks between indoor and outdoor spaces, where five performers embody different stages of transformation.
Character Assignments & Movement Patterns
Bertrand - The Dormant Seed
- Begin curled in fetal position center stage
- Movement quality: contained tension, micro-trembles suggesting internal potential
- Costume: Layered fabrics that can be shed throughout performance
- Sound signature: Deep hums, heartbeat rhythms (ba-dum ba-dum)
Jeanne - The Water Element/Erosion Force
- Fluid, persistent movement patterns
- Carries vessels of actual water, creating drip drip drip soundscapes
- Traces spiral patterns around other performers
- Costume: Flowing blues and silvers that catch light
Francioz - The Underground Network
- Moves primarily on ground level, creating physical connections between performers
- Uses long ribbons or ropes to literally connect characters
- Whispers "fragments" of text to audience members
- Costume: Earth tones with visible root-like attachments
Zebee - The Light Seeker/Photosynthesis Dream
- Vertical movement emphasis, always reaching upward
- Carries portable lights, mirrors, or reflective surfaces
- Creates "green tongue" moments through emerald scarves or projections
- Costume: Gradients from dark to bright green
Emily - The Consciousness Observer/Time Keeper
- Moves between all spaces, sometimes backwards
- Rings small bells (ping ping ping) at transformation moments
- Breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to audience about "NOW NOW NOW"
- Costume: Prismatic, color-shifting materials
Spatial Design & Movement Flow
Act I: Indoor Germination (20 minutes)
1. Begin in complete darkness with only breathing sounds
2. Bertrand's first CRACK! illuminates the space
3. Other performers emerge from audience, not from backstage
4. Create "neural network" formations using bodies and ribbons
5. Build to cacophony of overlapping text fragments
Transition: The Breaking (5 minutes)
- House lights suddenly full
- All performers freeze except Emily
- Emily guides audience outside while speaking about "necessary breaking"
- Sound of actual seeds cracking played through hidden speakers
Act II: Outdoor Expansion (25 minutes)
1. Performers already positioned at various heights (if possible: trees, platforms)
2. Audience discovers them in tableau
3. Francioz has created a ground pattern with natural materials
4. Movement becomes increasingly synchronized
5. Culminates in a "forest dance" where audience is invited to join
Return: Integration (10 minutes)
- Slow procession back inside
- Space transformed with projections of microscopic/cosmic imagery
- Performers exchange costume pieces, becoming hybrid beings
- End with all five creating a human mandala, breathing as one
Technical Elements
Sound Design:
- Layer natural sounds with electronic processing
- Use contact microphones on performers' bodies
- Install speakers in unexpected places (under seats, in trees)
- Create "purple hope" moments with specific harmonic frequencies
Lighting:
- Begin with single pinpoint, expand to full wash
- Use UV lights for "invisible connection" moments
- Outdoor section uses sunset/natural light as dramaturgy
- Shadows as important as light
Props & Materials:
- Actual seeds for audience to hold
- Water in various containers
- Stretchy fabric to show expansion/contraction
- Mirrors to fragment and multiply images
- Soil (safely contained) for sensory moments
Audience Interaction Protocols
1. Seeding Moments: Give each audience member a seed packet upon entry
2. Touch Permissions: Performers may gently touch audience members' shoulders (with pre-show consent)
3. Whisper Networks: Francioz passes messages through audience
4. Movement Invitations: Zebee teaches simple gestures audience can mirror
5. Collective Breathing: Emily conducts group breathing exercises
Performance Notes
- Embrace neurodivergent time: scenes can expand/contract based on energy
- If something "breaks" (prop, sequence), incorporate it as transformation
- Text should feel discovered, not memorized
- Overlap languages if possible (French fragments?)
- "Mistakes" are mutations - keep them
- End time should align with actual sunset if possible
Safety & Accessibility
- Clear pathways for all movement abilities
- Offer stationary viewing option for outdoor section
- Provide sensory bags with seeds, textured fabrics
- Sign language interpreter as sixth performer
- Quiet spaces available for regulation
Final Integration
The performance succeeds when audience members feel they ARE seeds, experiencing their own potential for transformation. The indoor/outdoor journey mirrors the darkness-to-light growth pattern, while the five performers demonstrate that breaking open together creates forests of possibility.
Remember: Everything connected by invisible mycelial thoughts...
"Seeds of Connection" - Theatrical Dialogue
Act I: Indoor Germination
Opening Darkness
BERTRAND (from center, barely audible)
flesh holds... holds... tiny dormant universes in muscle fiber...
EMILY (from among audience)
ping ping ping against bone walls... time isn't linear in seed-space...
JEANNE (water sounds beginning)
drip... drip... drip...
BERTRAND (louder)
everything happening NOW and THEN and WILL BE...
FRANCIOZ (whispering to audience members)
armillaria ostoyae... biggest living thing is underground... did you know? connected... all connected...
First CRACK!
BERTRAND
CRACK!
(Light explodes as Bertrand unfurls)
ZEBEE (emerging, reaching)
photosynthesis dreams in green tongues... chlorophyll prayers climbing climbing...
EMILY
necessary breaking... necessary opening... spilling light everywhere...
ALL (overlapping)
can't contain can't contain CAN'T CONTAIN...
Neural Network Formation
FRANCIOZ (creating physical connections)
thread-like roots = neural networks = fungal highways = cosmic web =
EMILY
all same pattern repeating fractally into infinity...
JEANNE (to specific audience member)
water knows the way... erosion is love is patience is TIME...
ZEBEE
hope tastes purple sometimes... did you know?
BERTRAND (to another audience member)
who am I when I'm no longer what I was but not yet what I'll be?
Building Cacophony
ALL (fragments overlapping, increasing speed)
FRANCIOZ: underground whispers... mycelial thoughts spreading spreading...
JEANNE: Mother Earth's heartbeat... ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum...
ZEBEE: green tongues licking light addiction...
BERTRAND: suspended animation of growth...
EMILY: zoom in zoom out doesn't matter... seeds within seeds within seeds...
Transition: The Breaking
(House lights sudden full. All freeze except Emily)
EMILY (to audience)
Listen... bones know what brain forgets... ancient seed memories encoded in mitochondria... Come. The breaking open is the prayer... staying closed is the fear...
(Leading audience outside)
Sometimes weeds are medicine... sometimes medicine is poison... depends who's swallowing...

Performance Notes for Dialogue:
- Overlap Instructions: Words in italics can be whispered to individual audience members
- Physical Scores: Each line should have accompanying movement
- Repetition Freedom: Performers can repeat any phrase that resonates in the moment
- Language Play: Replace some words with sounds, gestures, or other languages
- Audience Echo: Invite audience to repeat certain phrases, especially "NOW NOW NOW"
- Volume Dynamics: Range from barely audible whispers to full-voice celebrations
- Silence Spaces: Build in breathing moments where only environmental sounds exist
Remember: The dialogue is a seed itself - let it crack open differently each performance
