ACT ONE
Scene 1
Pre-dawn purple light. ANE's kitchen. She holds a pressed delphinium to the window. The flower is translucent, almost breathing.
ANE
Does photosynthesis continue after we die?
She laughs - the sound of discovery and loss combined
Listen to me. Forty years of measuring stomatal conductance, forty years of gas exchange rates and carbon fixation pathways, and here I am at 4 AM asking a dead flower questions that belong in freshman biology.
Holds flower to light
Still blue. Blue as those hospital gowns that never fit right. Blue as the veins that rose like rivers—no, like root systems—across her hands when the morphine stopped mattering.
To the flower
You were pressed between pages 347 and 348 of Henderson's Botanical Index. She pressed you the day before diagnosis. Did you know? Is that why you're still so perfectly, impossibly blue?
Pause
The roses knew. Room 347. Even the number feels heavy now, like a date in history that changed everything. 11:23 PM. Tuesday. The exact moment her breathing stopped—ceased, terminated, concluded, all those clinical words—every rose in that room opened. Not gradually. Not with the phototropic hesitation of normal blooms seeking light. Instantly. Simultaneously. Like synchronized swimmers responding to music only they could hear.
She sets down the flower, pulls out her phone
Hashtag MiracleRoses. 47 million views. 12,000 comments debating God versus coincidence versus "energy." My mother's death has become content.
IGNASI
(Suddenly present, though no door opened)
The question grows roots before we notice.
ANE
(Not startled, as if expecting him)
Are you death? Because if you are, you're late. About three weeks late.
IGNASI
I go where the living contemplate the dead. Tonight, that's here. Your mother asked about the roses.
ANE
You can't know that. She was non-verbal for the last—
IGNASI
Words aren't the only language. Look.
He gestures to the window. Outside, THIERRY plants something that glows. The light pulses like a heartbeat.
ANE
Bioluminescence. Luciferin-luciferase reaction. Simple chemistry.
IGNASI
Is it? Watch.
Where Thierry planted, a tree spirals upward, all seasons visible on its branches simultaneously
ANE
That's... that violates everything. Growth rates, seasonal dormancy, the entire phenological cycle—
IGNASI
Your mother understood. The roses were trying to tell you something.
ANE
What?
IGNASI
That death is just another form of photosynthesis. Transformation of one energy into another. She's not gone. She's just changed wavelengths.
Scene 2
The community garden. SANDRINE faces a camera operated by DMITRI. Green static flickers on her teleprompter.
SANDRINE
(Professional voice, but uncertain)
This is Sandrine Martel reporting from... (confused) Dmitri, where are we exactly?
DMITRI
(Staring through viewfinder)
Somewhere between Channel 4 and eternity.
SANDRINE
That's not helpful. (To camera) We're investigating reports of impossible botanical phenomena. Flowers that bloom without light. Trees that bear fruit in winter. Gardens that grow in hospital rooms where—
She stops. The words feel wrong.
DMITRI
The lens sees only what believes in endings.
SANDRINE
What's gotten into you?
THIERRY approaches, pulls an apple from the soil itself. It glows with inner warmth.
THIERRY
(His first words, voice like earth turning)
The sun never sets in the garden inside.
DMITRI begins to weep
SANDRINE
Cut. CUT! Dmitri, what—
DMITRI
(Through tears)
My son. Three years ago. Leukemia. I never told him about the garden inside.
ANE and IGNASI enter the garden space
ANE
He doesn't usually speak. The gardener. I've watched him for months from my window. Never says a word.
SANDRINE
(To Ane)
Dr. Castell? You're on my interview list. Your mother's roses—
ANE
Became internet famous. Yes. I'm aware.
IGNASI
(Moving through the garden)
Every tradition writes its own botany. Watch.
The space transforms. Different areas show different visions of afterlife gardens.
Scene 3: Paradise Physics
The garden becomes galleries of paradise. ENSEMBLE members embody different traditions. Space reorganizes around Ignasi's presence.
IGNASI
Here—rivers flow backward, carrying prayers to their source.
ENSEMBLE MEMBER 1
In my grandmother's tradition, trees grow wishes instead of leaves.
IGNASI
Here—fruit regenerates with each bite. Scarcity rendered meaningless.
ENSEMBLE MEMBER 2
My mother spoke of pomegranates that hold rubies. Each one a kindness remembered.
A pomegranate appears, splits open. Ruby light spills out.
ANE
The energy has to come from somewhere. First law of thermodynamics—
IGNASI
Love generates particles. Your grandmother knew this.
ANE
My grandmother grew tomatoes.
IGNASI
That tasted like joy. Literal joy. You thought it was metaphor because metaphor is safer than miracle.
SANDRINE
(Abandoning her camera)
I've covered seventeen conflicts. Interviewed sixty-three war criminals. Documented mass graves where flowers refuse to grow. But this tree—this impossible tree makes me want to write poetry.
ANE
You hate poetry. You said so. On that panel.
SANDRINE
I said it was "escapist bullshit." (Pause) I was wrong about a lot of things.
THIERRY begins planting. Each seed glows differently.
THIERRY
Morning glory. For the uncle who loved fishing. Died Tuesday, never saw Wednesday's dawn. He gave every catch to the food bank. The fish remember him.
Plants more seeds
Roses that heal instead of wound. For hands that arthritis turned to claws but still played Chopin. Nocturne in E-flat major. For the nursing home residents. Even when it hurt.
He offers seeds to ANE
Your mother's delphinium.
ANE
She's dead.
THIERRY
Death is a filing system. Two folders: gone and staying. Both true. Plant them.
ANE
Why?
THIERRY
Because the alternative is not planting.
Scene 4: The Vision
Time becomes visible as colored streams. The ENSEMBLE creates flowing ribbons of past/present/future.
ANE
(Planting the seeds)
Her last word was "garden." I thought she was confused. Morphine dreams. But she grabbed my hand—her grip still so strong—and said it clearly. "Garden."
The seeds pulse with warmth
I feel... oh god, I feel her. Not metaphorically. Actually. In my cells.
IGNASI
Bodies are documents. Scientists read them one way, mystics another. Gardeners just call them roots.
SANDRINE suddenly convulses, having a vision
SANDRINE
No... I see it. I see it all.
Scene 5: The Breaking
The protest vision. ENSEMBLE becomes protesters with signs that grow leaves.
PROTESTERS
More chlorophyll for the dead!
Let our gardens transcend!
More chlorophyll for the dead!
Where does photosynthesis end?
SANDRINE
(Prophetic fury)
NO! You're filing this wrong! Don't you see? The gardens aren't coming—they're already HERE! Growing inside your chest! Every breath you take is photosynthesis! Every kindness is nitrogen for heaven's soil! Stop looking UP when you should be looking IN!
She hurls her microphone. It transforms mid-flight into a bird of light.
DMITRI
(Still filming the empty sky)
Got it. Finally got something worth recording.
ANE
The bird... it's made of light. Biophotons. But that's impossible unless—
IGNASI
Unless love generates particles.
End of Act One

ACT TWO
Scene 1: The Garden Inside
The garden has become even more surreal. Plants grow in impossible directions. Time flows in eddies.
ANE
(To the audience)
Here's what they don't tell you about grief: it's a kind of science. Hypothesis: mother is gone. Data: empty hospital bed, ashes in an urn, silent phone. Conclusion: permanent absence. But what if the methodology is flawed? What if we're measuring the wrong variables?
The delphinium she planted begins growing inward, into her
Oh. Oh no. It's inside me. Growing. I can feel photosynthesis in my bloodstream.
MOTHER'S VOICE
(From everywhere and nowhere)
Annie, love. I'm in the ultraviolet now. The infrared. Colors you haven't learned to see. Photosynthesis never stops, baby. Just changes departments.
ANE
(Breaking down)
Mom?
MOTHER'S VOICE
I'm in the garden inside. We all are. Every kindness you've done is growing here. Remember when you secretly paid for your lab assistant's mother's funeral? Roses. That time you gave your lunch to the janitor every day for a month? Apple trees. All of it, growing.
SANDRINE
(To Dmitri)
Are you getting this?
DMITRI
I threw away the camera twenty minutes ago. I'm recording with my heart now.
Scene 2: The Planting Ritual
THIERRY creates a central garden. All watch as he works.
THIERRY
Every seed carries its own story. This sunflower—for the child who drew suns on hospital walls. This jasmine—for the nurse who sang lullabies to the dying. This oak—for everyone who planted beauty for people they'd never meet.
SANDRINE
My whole career... every tragedy I covered...
IGNASI
Is composting into something else. The murdered children become forests. The war dead grow into peace treaties written in chlorophyll. Nothing is lost. Only transformed.
SANDRINE
I've been using the wrong hashtags. Wrong language. Wrong eyes.
She kneels, plants something invisible
This is for the stories I didn't tell. The kindnesses I didn't report. The miracles I called coincidence.
Scene 3: Convergence
All characters work together in the garden. The ENSEMBLE returns as transformed protesters.
PROTESTERS
(New signs growing letters)
"Photosynthesis Is How Light Prays"
"The Earth Remembers Forward"
"Plant Love, Harvest Forever"
"Yes" (in leaves that bloom as we watch)
ANE
What is photosynthesis?
ALL
(A liturgy)
Light becoming life.
ANE
What is death?
ALL
Life becoming light.
ANE
What is the garden inside?
ALL
Where every kindness grows.
Where nothing planted in love dies.
Where chlorophyll continues forever.
THIERRY
(Teaching through action)
Plant sorrow here—joy grows.
Plant rage here—understanding fruits.
Plant fear—courage blooms.
Simple as breath. Stupid simple.
Scene 4: Final Understanding
Dawn beginning. The garden exists in all times simultaneously.
ANE
The question I asked at 4 AM—does photosynthesis continue after we die—I have my answer.
IGNASI
Which is?
ANE
Yes. But not the way we measure it. Not with instruments that believe in endings. It continues in every act of kindness, every moment of beauty created for someone else. We are all gardeners. We are all gardens.
SANDRINE
My microphone became a bird. My anger became seeds. My reports are growing in departments I'll never visit. Very sustainable.
DMITRI
My tears became rain. My son... I can feel him growing something beautiful somewhere.
THIERRY
Every tradition files the same conclusion. Different fonts, same finding.
ALL
Any heaven worth the name—
ANE
Must be green.
They stand in the garden that exists in all tenses simultaneously. Each speaks their understanding:
ANE
Green as chlorophyll continuing through dimensions.
IGNASI
Green as the space between prayer and answer.
SANDRINE
Green as truth growing past cameras.
THIERRY
Green as the world before we learned endings.
DMITRI
Green as my son's favorite color.
ALL
Green as spring. Green as hope. Green as what remains.
Lights slowly fade to green. In the darkness, we hear photosynthesis—a whisper that sounds like breathing, like growing, like the earth remembering how to heal.
MOTHER'S VOICE
Any heaven worth the name must be green.
File it under "Eternal."
File it under "True."
Back it up to the cloud that actually rains.
Blackout
