*THE JOY THIEVES OF LYON ~ A Guerrilla Theater Operation Against the Happiness Industrial Complex
An Anti-Capitalist Celebration in Multiple Sites

ARCHITECTURE OF RESISTANCE

Pre-Show: The Joy Audit (One Week Before)

Participants receive a "Joy Ledger" tracking:
- Free joys experienced vs. purchased pleasures
- Gender-conforming vs. gender-breaking delights
- Moments of letting go vs. holding on
- Unexpected human connections

This data feeds into the live performance, creating unique shows based on each audience's joy patterns.

---

ACT ONE: The Factory of Stolen Delights
Location: Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse (after closing)

The market transformed into a "Joy Factory" where happiness is packaged and sold.

DAWN (45, former marketing executive, now joy insurgent):
I used to sell happiness.
Not make it. Sell it.
Package wonder into purchase-sized portions.
Transform free sunsets into vacation packages.
Turn friendship into social media metrics.

Shows Powerpoint of joy commodification

Slide 1: Child laughing (free)
Slide 2: "Happiness Workshop" ($400)
See the markup?

TIKEN (28, they/them, escaped the gender binary):
They told me my joy had to pick a shelf.
Men's joy: competitive, loud, purchased through victory.
Women's joy: decorative, quiet, purchased through beauty.
But my joy is feral. It shops in no aisles.

Starts painting their face with both "masculine" and "feminine" joy symbols

CHIWON (67, Korean grandmother, memory keeper):
I remember when kimchi was joy, not product.
Every grandmother's batch different.
Now: standardized, packaged, priced.
They stole our fermentation time and sold it back as convenience.

Opens jar after jar of identical commercial kimchi

All same. All dead. All efficient.
No grandmother's hands. No waiting. No surprise.

KUTI (22, architecture student from Senegal):
In Dakar, our buildings curve like dancing.
Here, everything is straight. Efficient. Profitable.
They straightened our joy into productivity lines.

Projects images of curved African architecture vs. straight European buildings

Your eyes are starving for curves.
Your joy is dying in rectangles.

AUGUSTUS (39, reformed banker):
I counted money for twenty years.
Never counted heartbeats.
Measured portfolios.
Never measured breath.
Rich in numbers, bankrupt in sensation.

Empties briefcase full of shredded money

This confession costs nothing.
First free thing I've given in decades.

---

ACT TWO: The Threshold Rebellion
Location: Moving through Lyon's Traboules (secret passages)

Audience follows performers through the hidden passages, each doorway a transformation.

Passage 1: The Gender Joy Dissolve

TIKEN (at doorway):
This side: who you're supposed to joy as.
Other side: who you actually joy as.
The doorway doesn't check your papers.

Audience passes through, receiving stick-on gems, temporary tattoos, fabric pieces to add regardless of presentation

Passage 2: The Memory Release Chamber

CHIWON (holding photos that dissolve in water):
Your joy memories want to flow, not freeze.
Watch.

Drops photo in fountain - image disperses into beautiful colors

Not destroyed. Transformed.
Now it's everywhere instead of nowhere.

Passage 3: The Curve Training

KUTI (in spiral staircase):
Straight stairs: A to B.
Spiral stairs: A to B via the scenic route.
Your cells prefer tourism to commuting.

Audience climbs spiral stairs painfully slowly, feeling each curve

Passage 4: The Currency Exchange

AUGUSTUS (with two bowls):
Deposit purchased joy. Withdraw free joy.
Exchange rate: infinite.

Audience writes purchased joys on paper (dissolving), receives river stones with single words: "sunset," "breath," "laugh"

Passage 5: The Dawn Protocol

DAWN (at final passage to riverside):
I named myself after free joy.
Dawn costs nothing, happens daily.
Capitalism can't stop it, only make you sleep through it.

Leads audience to the Saône riverbank

---

ACT THREE: The Joy Commons
Location: Banks of the Saône, pre-dawn

The Cellular Manifesto

All performers in a line, lit by phone lights held by audience

ALL:
Our 37 trillion cells practice communism successfully.
No cell hoards oxygen.
No cell charges for services.
Every cell gives everything, receives everything.
We are walking anti-capitalist collectives.

DAWN:
Your liver doesn't invoice your heart.

TIKEN:
Your lungs don't gatekeep air.

CHIWON:
Your stomach doesn't mortgage digestion.

KUTI:
Your blood flows without toll booths.

AUGUSTUS:
You are already living proof that sharing works.

The Free Joy Inventory

Each performer leads a different free joy practice

DAWN (teaching dawn breathing):
Inhale: I own this air.
Exhale: I gift this carbon to trees.
The economy of breath requires no credit.

TIKEN (leading gender play):
Strut masculine. Sway feminine.
Stumble non-binary.
Notice: your cells don't care.
Joy is genderfluid at the molecular level.

CHIWON (memory release ritual):
Remember intensely for ten seconds.
Now let it go completely.
Memory isn't storage. It's composting.

KUTI (curve walking):
Walk to nowhere in particular.
Meander. Wander. Curve.
Efficiency is violence against wonder.

AUGUSTUS (value revolution):
Count your breaths like money.
You're breathing millionaire.
Respiratory royalty.
Pulmonary plutocrat.
But democratic - everyone's equally rich in breath.

---

ACT FOUR: The Market Infiltration
Location: Return to Les Halles as morning market opens

The Intervention

Performers and audience infiltrate the opening market

DAWN (at flower stall):
These flowers are beautiful.
Also: flowers are free in fields.
Both true. Choose consciously.

TIKEN (at cheese counter):
This cheese is €30/kg.
Also: satisfaction is free in your gut.
Purchase mindfully.

CHIWON (at prepared foods):
This convenience costs time you traded for money.
Also: cooking is meditation.
What are you really buying?

KUTI (measuring straight aisles):
90-degree angles. Maximum efficiency.
Also: your eyes are crying for curves.
Notice what's missing.

AUGUSTUS (at ATM):
Withdrawing currency.
Also: depositing life hours.
The exchange rate is hidden.

The Alternative Economy

Performers set up "Free Joy Stand" giving away:
- Dawn observations (free)
- Gender play permission slips (free)
- Memory release ceremonies (free)
- Curve-walking maps (free)
- Breath counting workshops (free)

Market Security arrives

SECURITY: You need permits to give things away.

ALL PERFORMERS: We're not giving things. We're giving nothing. Beautifully packaged nothing.

SECURITY (confused): Nothing is free?

ALL: Exactly! Nothing IS free! Everything else costs!

---

ACT FIVE: The Joy Virus
Location: Place Bellecour, noon

The Epidemic

Performers begin solo, gradually gathering crowd

DAWN (spinning slowly):
I'm dizzy with free joy.
Vestibular fluid: priceless.
Inner ear carnival: no admission.

Strangers start spinning

TIKEN (skipping):
Adult skipping in public.
Gender irrelevant.
Efficiency destroyed.
Joy leaking everywhere.

Business people begin skipping

CHIWON (laughing at nothing):
No joke. Just laughing.
Diaphragm dancing.
Abs celebrating.
Free entertainment.

Laughter spreads

KUTI (drawing curves in air):
Invisible architecture.
Temporary beauty.
Dissolved immediately.
Worth everything.

Everyone drawing air curves

AUGUSTUS (counting loudly):
One heartbeat! Two heartbeats! Three heartbeats!
I'm rich! Four heartbeats! Five heartbeats!
Cardiac millionaire!

Crowd counting heartbeats

The Final Manifesto

ALL PERFORMERS (as crowd grows):
Joy was free until they packaged it.
Gendered until we refused the categories.
Frozen until we let it flow.
Straight until we remembered curves.
Scarce until we started sharing.

Your body is broadcasting joy on all channels.
Capitalism jammed the signal.
We're clearing the frequency.

This is not performance.
This is remembrance.
This is not protest.
This is practice.

Every free joy is revolution.
Every shared laugh is resistance.
Every purposeless moment is victory.
Every curve is rebellion.
Every breath is birthright.

The factory of free joy is in your cells.
You own the means of production.
You are the means of production.

Start manufacturing.
Start distributing.
Start the epidemic.

Joy is contagious.
No vaccine.
No cure.
Only transmission.

Spread it.

IMAGISTIC AMPLIFICATIONS OF THE JOYFUL BODY

The Anti-Capitalist Cell Collective
Your cells operate on gift economy. The heart gifts oxygen-rich blood asking nothing in return. The lungs gift oxygen without invoicing. Your body is 37 trillion communists successfully cooperating. You are walking proof that capitalism isn't "natural."

The Gender-Fluid Nervous System
Your neurons don't have gender. They fire for flowers and football equally. Your synapses don't care if joy comes from "masculine" or "feminine" sources. At the cellular level, you are already non-binary. Your joy receptors are pansexual.

The Memory River System
Your hippocampus doesn't store memories like files but like water - constantly flowing, mixing, reforming. Every recall changes the memory slightly. You're not a hard drive but a river. Letting go isn't loss; it's flow.

The Curve Recognition Complex
Your eyes have specialized cells that respond to curves - edge detectors that fire more actively for rounded shapes. Capitalism's straight lines literally under-stimulate your visual cortex. Your eyes are anatomically biased toward nature's curves.

The Threshold Reset Mechanism
Your brain performs "event boundary processing" at doorways - literally resetting your neural state. Every passage is a micro-reincarnation. Capitalism turned doorways into efficiency ports, but your brain still treats them as transformation chambers.

The Unexpected Joy Cascade
Surprise triggers norepinephrine release, enhancing memory formation. Unexpected joy literally carves deeper neural pathways than predicted pleasure. Your brain is designed to prefer surprise to safety. Predictability is neurological poverty.

The Commons of Breath
You breathe 11,000 liters of air daily, sharing molecules with every breathing being. The oxygen in your lungs was in someone else's yesterday, will be in trees tomorrow. Breath is the ultimate commons - uncommodifiable, shareable, essential. Every breath is borrowed and gifted simultaneously.

The Free Movement Economy
Your proprioceptors generate joy signals from simple position changes. Standing after sitting, stretching after stillness - each transition triggers pleasure chemistry. Movement joy requires no equipment, no membership, no purchase. Your body generates wealth from geometry changes.

The revolution is cellular.
The resistance is anatomical.
The uprising is biological.
Your body already knows how.
