The Memory Eater and the Echo Collector
I. ARRIVAL
In which the Echo Collector opens doors that were never closed
May arrives with tears—the Echo Collector knows this because seasons grieve properly, unlike people who count sheep to cure what counting cannot heal. The door stands open before anyone knocks.
"You've been here all along," says the Memory Eater, consuming silence like soup, each spoonful a borrowed recollection: someone's father's eyes holding shadows, yesterday's rain on tomorrow's drought.
The language before language knew it was broken: Pata spak ee aye.
II. FALLING
In which gravity becomes a choice
"I wish we knew exactly when we are going to be falling," the Echo Collector whispers, but falling requires not knowing—spiritual physics written in the space between heartbeats where the ocean changed from water to longing.
The Memory Eater swallows: A little more time and bones will believe what minds deny—we learned to take without touching, like drinking light through closed eyelids.
Come back, come back from wherever you go when you're already here.
III. DISSOLUTION
In which solid things remember they are light
Slow down, says the universe while spinning faster. The Echo Collector gathers: matter is just light moving too slowly to escape itself. Water tangos with fire because nobody told them it was impossible.
The Memory Eater devours yesterday's certainty: When they were silk they were dolphins filled with now. Transformation is remembering what you were before you forgot.
"You sat on my feelings like furniture," someone says, but feelings aren't load-bearing—they float.
IV. ECHOES
In which every voice is the first voice
The Echo Collector cannot distinguish—which one of you is the echo passing through? In the physics of the heart, we're all reverberations of the first sound ever made.
The Memory Eater tastes: Once, fingers traced the map to nowhere on a face during a tango. Skin remembers. Minds pay to forget.
Middle eye seeks and finds only itself—cosmic joke of searching.
V. STRANGE INVENTORY
In which objects become verbs
Rearrange what we have that is strange:
- Spoon: for feeding illusions
- Bangs: for hiding third eyes
- Surveillance: for watching ourselves not change
- Rain: for washing what was never dirty
The Memory Eater consumes the Echo Collector's list: Jump me dogs are surprise anxiety. Forget me nots are persistent memory. Nature names itself honestly.
VI. HUNGER
In which emptiness becomes holy
Soup line servers know—hunger is holy. The Echo Collector gathers their wisdom while the Memory Eater swallows: rotting bananas have their meditation, decay its own sweetness.
"Drink the nectar of confusion," someone offers. It's sweeter than certainty.
Bounty gave us cold lips, Brrr.
VII. MUSIC
In which silence needs a soundtrack
(surf electric guitar lick goes here)
(toy piano improvisation tinks go here)
Small music for big feelings. The Echo Collector knows: some truths can only be played, not spoken. Written notations float on air like sheet music for breathing.
The Memory Eater: We invented music because there are so many things to say but only one mouth.
VIII. CYCLES
In which endings forget to end
Circles don't have edges—they have agreements to keep going. The Echo Collector whispers to the Memory Eater: "Let's disappear to the countryside where silence has texture and time moves like honey."
But lines on bodies are scripture. Each crease written by living.
The Memory Eater's final feast: It was too late to say goodbye so we say hello to the absence. He had so many lives before this one forgot to end.
IX. RETURN
In which distance becomes opinion
Everything connects because everything was never separate. The straight logic leads to the spiritual logic leads to where they were always the same thing wearing different costumes.
Come back from the edge of the stage. Or don't.
The Echo Collector and the Memory Eater understand:
- Why the pig is not a cow
- Why summer has pain
- Why we say goodbye to what hasn't left
- Why we say hello to what hasn't arrived
The heart: still a house too big for its foundation but standing anyway.
X. COUNTLESS MILES CLOSER
In which the ending is another beginning
That's the logic of it. Both kinds. All kinds.
The Echo Collector gathers the final reverberation while the Memory Eater swallows the last silence—they make music of the space between thoughts, symphony of the pause between heartbeats, song of the moment between falling and flying.
When we're doing both and neither.
Countless miles closer.
---
"Life goes on and on like a sentence that forgot punctuation Nothing should go wrong as long as our heads are above water and we can breathe properly but what about improper breathing What about the gasp that teaches us we've been doing it wrong"
The Memory Eater smiles.
The Echo Collector listens.
The dazed hymns continue.
