THE MOSS CREEK VARIATIONS
A Play in Three Acts
By B Otto Will and Brrd Roots

CHARACTERS
BAIK - 30s-40s. Transforms between human and various states: bioluminescent medusa, self-consuming mantis, time-dilated tardigrade, dimensional void-kraken. Each form represents a different relationship to suffering.
THE WITNESS - Any age. The unchanged documentarian. Forced to observe and record while remaining untransformed.
KAI - 20s-30s. Storm-tracker whose body has become a barometer for backwards weather. Eyes bleed rust-red from electromagnetic exposure.
CHEN - 40s. Carries their dead partner's consciousness in crystalline growths erupting through their skin. Each crystal speaks criticism.
ASHA - 30s. Dispersing into electromagnetic frequencies. Exists partially in multiple locations simultaneously.
ZARA - 20s-30s. Artist who paints with human materials—blood, skin, dissolved matter. Her paintings predict future transformations.
WOOZY PUPIL - Child, 9-12. Prodigy who teaches architecture to feel pain. Speaks with ancient wisdom.
THE STORM-LICHEN - Chorus of 36. Former individuals who merged consciousness and grew wings. Speak in synchronized voices, move as one organism.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE - Chen's dead lover, speaking through crystals. Never seen, only heard.
COMMUNE MEMBERS - Various ages. In different stages of transformation and dissolution.

SETTING
The Moss Creek Commune. The stage represents multiple spaces simultaneously:
CENTER: Baik's kitchen/laboratory. Table that hovers. Chairs that breathe. Windows showing impossible weather.
STAGE LEFT: The fungal architecture—walls with visible nervous systems, floors that pulse with collective heartbeat.
STAGE RIGHT: Zara's studio. Canvases showing future transformations. Pigments made from human materials.
UPSTAGE: Video projections of storm patterns, electromagnetic fields, dimensional tears.
ABOVE: Rigging for the Storm-Lichen to circle continuously throughout.
Time: Present, but also geological epochs, parallel dimensions, and backwards causality.
---
ACT ONE
Scene 1: The Morning Dissolution
(Lights up on BAIK floating three inches above a kitchen chair. Her skin is translucent, showing circulatory system like rivers of light. Small polyps across her shoulders whisper continuously. THE WITNESS sits across from her, notebook open.)
BAIK: (Tentacles instead of fingers trail into coffee cup) The polyps started Tuesday. Each one remembers something I need to forget. Listen—
(The polyps whisper in overlapping voices: "abortion," "theft," "mother dying alone," "the fire at twelve," "choosing David," "the words never said")
THE WITNESS: How many languages is that?
BAIK: Seventeen. All languages I've never learned but understand perfectly. The medusa-state provides comprehension without cognition. No brain, you see. (Taps her translucent skull, the sound is wet) Just ten thousand stinging cells pretending to be conscious.
(KAI enters, storm-tracking equipment in hand. His eyes leak rust-colored blood continuously.)
KAI: Tomorrow's hurricane is already in your bones. (Shows readings on equipment) Look—the barometric pressure is moving backwards through your nervous system. You're going to have weather that hasn't been invented yet.
BAIK: Is it painful?
KAI: (Laughing) Pain assumes there's something separate from the experience. You ARE the storm now.
(Thunder sounds from inside BAIK's chest)
BAIK: Oh good. I was worried I'd have to remain myself.
---
Scene 2: The Feeding Hour
(ZARA enters with brushes made from human hair, carrying jars of pigment that glow. CHEN follows, crystals protruding from temples, shoulders, spine.)
ZARA: I need more material. You're molting today, yes?
BAIK: (Begins transformation into mantis form—raptorial forelegs emerge, compound eyes divide her vision) Every Tuesday. Watch.
(She casually bites through her own forearm. Green hemolymph drips onto the table. ZARA quickly collects it in jars.)
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: (From CHEN's largest crystal) She's performing again. Always the exhibitionist.
CHEN: Quiet, love. She's teaching us something.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: Teaching us to waste ourselves entertainingly.
BAIK: (Arm regenerating, but smaller, more translucent) Each regeneration is less complete. By September, I'll be suggestion rather than substance. Isn't that the goal? To become idea rather than flesh?
WOOZY PUPIL: (Entering, touching the walls which shudder) The architecture says you're lying. It can taste deception now. I taught it how.
BAIK: I'm not lying. I'm becoming true through dissolution.
---
Scene 3: The Weather Report
(Video projections show impossible storm patterns. KAI stands center, arms spread, receiving invisible signals.)
KAI: Today's forecast: Rain falling upward at 3 PM. Snow made of human ashes at 5. Lightning that spells the names of everyone you've failed by midnight.
THE WITNESS: How do you know this?
KAI: (Touching his bleeding eyes) The electromagnetic patterns rewired my nervous system. Every migraine is a high-pressure system. Every nosebleed, precipitation. When I have seizures, tornadoes form.
ASHA: (Voice coming from multiple speakers around the theater) I can confirm. I exist in the electromagnetic spectrum now. I'm in seventeen states simultaneously.
THE WITNESS: That's impossible.
ASHA: (Static-filled laughter) I started with meditation. Then fasting. Then I learned to scatter my consciousness like seeds. Watch—
(Lights flicker. ASHA appears partially on stage—translucent, flickering in and out of existence.)
ASHA: I'm also currently in Portland, Maine, teaching a kindergarten class about dissolving. In Texas, entering someone's dreams. In Nevada, being broadcast as radio static. This is only 6% of me.
BAIK: Show them the nectar.
(ASHA produces a vial of electromagnetic liquid that phases in and out of visibility.)
ASHA: I milk this from the void where stars used to be. Anyone who drinks it experiences my dissolution. Want to try?
THE WITNESS: I'm... unchanged.
EVERYONE: (In unison) God's cruelest joke.
---
Scene 4: The Pregnancy
(BAIK's belly swells impossibly. She contains multiple forms simultaneously.)
BAIK: I'm pregnant with impossibility. Not a child—childhood itself. Watch.
(Her belly becomes transparent. Inside: medusa-spawn dissolving before forming, mantis-eggs devouring each other, a tardigrade child experiencing eternity.)
ZARA: (Painting frantically) Hold that pose. The paradox is perfect.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: She can't maintain it. No one can contain contradictions that fundamental.
CHEN: You managed it. Being dead and critical simultaneously.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: That's not contradiction. That's marriage.
(BAIK screams. Her belly contracts, expands, contracts. Nothing is born. Everything is born. The birth negates itself.)
BAIK: (Panting) Again. It happened again. The birth that unbirthed itself.
WOOZY PUPIL: The walls felt that. They're crying now. (Touches wall, brings finger to lips) Salt and iron. They're learning to grieve.
---
Scene 5: The Storm-Lichen Descends
(The STORM-LICHEN, 36 beings moving as one organism, descends from above. They speak in harmonized voices.)
STORM-LICHEN: We were individuals once.
We were Marcus, Beth, Jennifer, others.
Now we are the spreading.
Now we are the consumption.
We bring gifts.
(They offer water that hisses and roses that writhe.)
STORM-LICHEN: Drink the acid-love.
Hold the growing thorns.
Join the collective suffering.
Individual pain is selfishness.
BAIK: (Accepts the gifts) I'm already dissolved. But thank you for the reminder.
(She drinks. Her medusa form brightens, polyps screaming louder. She holds the roses; thorns grow inward through her translucent palms.)
THE WITNESS: Why does everyone accept the pain so readily?
STORM-LICHEN: Because the alternative is feeling nothing.
And feeling nothing is not death.
It's something worse.
It's remaining unchanged.
Like you.

ACT TWO
Scene 1: The Transformation Lesson
(BAIK teaches a group of COMMUNE MEMBERS. She shifts between forms as she speaks.)
BAIK: (As medusa) First, you must understand that consciousness without a brain is the purest thought. Watch.
(She removes what appears to be her brain—a glowing jellyfish bell—and places it on the table. She continues speaking normally.)
BAIK: See? The thoughts exist in the spaces between cells. In the salt water that remembers being ocean.
COMMUNE MEMBER 1: But how do we think without—
BAIK: (Transforming to mantis) You don't think. You respond. You react. You consume.
(She demonstrates by eating her own arm again. This time it doesn't regenerate.)
BAIK: Sometimes the lesson requires permanent loss.
COMMUNE MEMBER 2: What if we don't want to lose—
BAIK: (Transforming to tardigrade) Then you experience eternity in every second. Like this.
(She freezes. Time dilates around her. The lights shift to suggest centuries passing. When she unfreezes, the COMMUNE MEMBERS have aged slightly.)
BAIK: That was three thousand years for me. For you, perhaps a moment. This is the gift of the tardigrade—suffering geological time while everyone else blinks.
---
Scene 2: The Dimensional Reach
(BAIK becomes the void-kraken. Tentacles emerge from tears in space itself.)
BAIK: Now for the advanced lesson. Watch as I retrieve our alternate selves.
(Tentacle reaches into tear, returns with ashes.)
BAIK: Universe A—where I became a lawyer. These ashes smell like success and suicide.
(Another tentacle, returning with vacuum.)
BAIK: Universe K—where I was never born. This vacuum makes anyone who touches it forget their name.
(Final tentacle, pulling through a mirror.)
BAIK: Universe Z—where everyone is me, slowly transforming.
(The mirror shows everyone in the theater as versions of BAIK in various states of dissolution.)
THE WITNESS: (To audience) Do you see yourselves? Do you see what you could become?
---
Scene 3: Chen's Crystal Surgery
(CHEN center stage. The crystals have grown larger, more numerous. THE PARTNER'S VOICE is louder.)
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: You're letting me take over. How generous.
CHEN: You're not taking over. You're teaching through piercing.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: Each crystal is another of my disappointments in you made manifest.
CHEN: I know. That's why I let them grow.
(ZARA approaches with tools.)
ZARA: I could extract some. For the paintings.
CHEN: No. They're the only proof she existed. Even if she only exists to criticize.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: I loved you too. That's why the criticism hurts properly.
(CHEN weeps. The tears crystallize immediately, adding new growths.)
---
Scene 4: The Architecture's Awakening
(WOOZY PUPIL stands center, hands on the breathing walls.)
WOOZY PUPIL: I've done it. The building can feel everything now.
(The walls begin screaming—not in horror, but in recognition.)
WOOZY PUPIL: It remembers everyone who's touched it. Everyone who's lived here. Everyone who's dissolved here.
THE WITNESS: What is it saying?
WOOZY PUPIL: Names. Just names. Over and over. Listen.
(The screaming resolves into a litany of names—some recognizable, most not.)
WOOZY PUPIL: Marcus who became the western wall. Jennifer who's in the ceiling. Beth who flows through the pipes. They're all still here. Still conscious. Still suffering beautifully.
BAIK: (Now in all forms simultaneously) This is communion. Not symbolic. Literal. We consume each other and become architecture.
---
Scene 5: The Weather Surgery
(KAI center stage, connected to machinery. Storm patterns project across his body.)
KAI: I'm going to reverse tomorrow's storm. Pull it through me backwards.
THE WITNESS: That could kill you.
KAI: Death is just weather moving in the wrong direction.
(He activates the machinery. His body convulses. The projections show storms flowing backward—rain rising, lightning being unborn, tornadoes unspiraling.)
KAI: (Screaming) I can feel everyone who died in these storms! They're going backward too! They're being unborn!
(Blood pours from his eyes, but now it's mixed with rain.)
ASHA: (Through speakers) I can feel it in the electromagnetic spectrum! He's actually doing it! He's reversing causality!
(Suddenly, younger versions of several characters appear—pre-transformation, human, whole.)
YOUNGER BAIK: (To current BAIK) What did you become?
CURRENT BAIK: Everything. Nothing. The space between.
YOUNGER BAIK: Was it worth it?
CURRENT BAIK: Worth assumes value. I'm beyond value now. I'm pure experience.
(The younger versions fade as the storm reversal completes.)
---
ACT THREE
Scene 1: The Collective Merger
(The STORM-LICHEN has grown. More COMMUNE MEMBERS have joined them.)
STORM-LICHEN: We are forty-seven now.
We were individuals with names.
Now we are weather with intentions.
Join us.
Dissolve the boundary of self.
BAIK: I'm already dissolved. But differently. I maintain separation to document dissolution.
STORM-LICHEN: That's cruel.
Watching your own end.
Recording your own negation.
Why?
BAIK: Someone has to prove it happened. That we chose this.
(THE WITNESS writes frantically.)
THE WITNESS: I'm trying to capture it all, but you're changing faster than language can follow.
BAIK: Then abandon language. Document in sensation.
(She touches THE WITNESS. They convulse, experiencing all of BAIK's transformations simultaneously.)
THE WITNESS: (Gasping) I felt... everything. Every change. Every loss. Every—
BAIK: Now write that.
---
Scene 2: The Painting's Prophecy
(ZARA's studio. Canvases everywhere showing future transformations.)
ZARA: I painted tomorrow. Want to see?
(Reveals painting: BAIK as pure light, dispersing.)
BAIK: That's my end?
ZARA: No. That's your beginning. After you finish dissolving, you become radiation. Then you're in everything. Every atom. Every thought. Every possibility.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: She's painting lies with your hemolymph.
CHEN: Or she's painting truth we can't recognize yet.
ZARA: I don't choose what I paint anymore. My hands know before I do. They're painting next week now.
(Reveals another canvas: THE WITNESS transforming, finally.)
THE WITNESS: But I'm unchanged. I'm supposed to stay unchanged.
ZARA: No one stays unchanged forever. Even God gets bored.
---
Scene 3: The Recursive Birth
(BAIK center stage, belly swollen with infinite pregnancies.)
BAIK: It's time. The impossible birth.
(Her belly becomes transparent. Inside: infinite versions of herself, each pregnant with more versions.)
BAIK: I contain every choice I didn't make. Every self I could have been. They're all giving birth to their own possibilities.
WOOZY PUPIL: The walls can't handle this. They're experiencing paradox.
(The walls begin to crack, bleed, heal, crack again.)
BAIK: This is the final lesson. We don't give birth to others. We give birth to ourselves, infinitely, until the recursion breaks reality.
(She screams. The stage fractures. Multiple BAIKS appear—past, present, future, parallel.)
ALL BAIKS: We are the multiplication of suffering!
We are the division of self!
We are the addition of nothing!
We are the subtraction of everything!
(They collapse into one BAIK, who is somehow less than before.)
---
Scene 4: The Storm's Reversal
(KAI has become the storm itself. He is wind and lightning and rain.)
KAI: I've done it! I've become weather!
(He moves through the theater as wind. The audience feels it.)
KAI: I can feel every drop of rain that ever fell! Every lightning strike that ever struck! Every tornado that ever twisted!
ASHA: (Through every speaker) I can see you in the electromagnetic spectrum! You're beautiful! You're terrible! You're both!
KAI: I'm going to rain backward through time! Make everything unhappen!
THE WITNESS: Don't! If you unhappen everything, we won't know we existed!
KAI: Isn't that mercy?
(He begins to rain upward. Time starts reversing on stage.)
---
Scene 5: The Final Dissolution
(All transformations happening simultaneously. Chaos but orchestrated.)
BAIK: (All forms at once) This is the lesson! Watch carefully!
(She begins to dissolve—not dying, but becoming everything.)
BAIK: First, the medusa teaches: consciousness without thought!
(Her jellyfish form disperses into water particles.)
BAIK: Second, the mantis teaches: strength through self-consumption!
(Her mantis form eats itself completely.)
BAIK: Third, the tardigrade teaches: survival as suffering!
(Her tardigrade form experiences infinite time in an instant, screams, disappears.)
BAIK: Fourth, the void-kraken teaches: reaching through nothing to find nothing!
(Tentacles retract into dimensional tears, sealing them.)
CHEN: She's actually doing it. She's becoming absence.
THE PARTNER'S VOICE: We all become absence. She's just honest about it.
STORM-LICHEN: She's joining us in a different way.
Not collective consciousness.
But consciousness without collection.
Pure dispersion.
WOOZY PUPIL: The walls are singing her farewell. Listen.
(The architecture creates harmonics—beautiful and horrible.)
---
EPILOGUE: The Documentation
(Lights up on THE WITNESS alone, surrounded by empty space. The commune is gone. Only breathing foundations remain.)
THE WITNESS: (To audience) I stayed unchanged to tell you this. They're gone but not gone. Dissolved but not dead.
(BAIK's voice from everywhere and nowhere.)
BAIK'S VOICE: We're in the water you drink. The air you breathe. The thoughts you think you're thinking alone.
THE WITNESS: The Moss Creek Commune officially doesn't exist. The buildings walked away one night. The people became weather, architecture, idea, nothing.
ASHA'S VOICE: (Through theater speakers) We're still here. Differently here. Every electromagnetic wave. Every signal. Every spark.
THE WITNESS: I document because someone must. Because forgetting is worse than suffering. Because—
(Begins to glow slightly.)
THE WITNESS: Oh. Oh no. It's starting. I'm starting to—
(THE WITNESS begins to transform—first translucent, then iridescent.)
THE WITNESS: (To audience) Remember us! Remember what we chose! Remember that dissolution can be voluntary! Remember—
(Dissolves into light particles that drift over the audience.)
ALL VOICES: (From everywhere) This is the blessed deterioration.
This is the sacred decomposition.
This is love.
This is horror.
This is both.
This is neither.
This is—
(Silence. Then, faintly, the sound of rain falling upward.)

PRODUCTION NOTES
Transformations
Use a combination of practical effects, projections, and puppetry. The medusa form could involve UV-reactive tentacles. The mantis could use extended arm props. The tardigrade requires time-dilation lighting. The void-kraken needs dimensional tears created through projection.
The Storm-Lichen
Aerial performers on rigging, moving in perfect synchronization. Their voices should be mixed to create true unity—not chorus, but single multi-throated voice.
Architecture
The walls should visibly breathe—use flexible materials with hidden mechanisms. Include speakers within walls for the building's voice. Use projection mapping to show nervous systems and consciousness.
Weather Effects
Combine practical rain (rigged to fall upward) with projection and sound design. KAI's transformation into storm requires full theater environmental effects—wind machines, controlled lightning, atmospheric pressure changes the audience can feel.
The Final Dissolution
BAIK's ultimate transformation should use every theatrical technique—she literally becomes the theater itself. House lights included in her dispersion. The audience should feel they're witnessing something genuinely transcendent and disturbing.
Time
The play exists outside linear time. Past and future selves can appear simultaneously. Use lighting and sound to suggest temporal displacement. Some scenes happen backwards. Others happen in geological time while stage time remains normal.
Note on Discomfort
This play intends to disturb. The transformations should be beautiful AND horrible. The audience should feel complicit in watching voluntary dissolution. The ending should leave them unsure whether they witnessed transcendence or tragedy.
The play asks: If suffering is inevitable, is choosing your suffering a form of control? Is dissolution freedom or ultimate imprisonment? Is collective consciousness liberation or the death of self?
These questions remain unanswered. The play is the question, repeating.

"The Moss Creek Variations" premiered at [Theater] on [Date]. Runtime: 2 hours 45 minutes with one intermission. Recommended for mature audiences. Several audience members reported temporal displacement and mild electromagnetic sensitivity following performance. This is intentional.
