THE MYCELIAL VISIONARY
A Theatrical Cartography of Sporing Consciousness
A Verse Drama in Five Acts
By [Adapted from the visions of B Otto Will]
Performance Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours without intermission
First Performance: [To be determined]
---
DRAMATIS PERSONAE
TROLLE - The Mycelial Network incarnate, ageless, wearing robes that shift like soil. Voice carries the weight of centuries. Shapeshifter who can become protestor, mountain ghost, or pure vibration.
CALYPSO - The Vessel of Memory. Appears first as an exhausted teacup, transforms into mirror, rain, barista, and ultimately pure song. Guardian of transformations and keeper of dissolved boundaries.
CHU - The Giraffe-Prophet of Paradoxes. Impossibly tall, wearing a small velvet hat. Neck extends through dimensions. Speaker of causal disruptions and tender absurdities. Occasionally accompanied by an invisible bat.
LIBAUX - B Otto Will/Sky Golden Feathers/Cool Hot Dot Soul/Walk From Shadows/Clarissa the Reporter. The human prism through which all identities refract. Neither one nor many.
ENSEMBLE - As needed: Protesters, Floating Souls, Anthropomorphic Concepts (Patience, Reverence, Expression, Melancholy), Underground Voices

PROLOGUE: THE INVOCATION
(Pre-show: As audience enters, bioluminescent threads slowly illuminate across the floor. Subsonic frequencies create a felt presence. Scent of damp earth.)
(Darkness. A single spore of light drifts across the stage.)
TROLLE (voice from everywhere and nowhere)
Listen—
Beneath your feet, a conversation
Four billion years in progress.
Chemical prayers, electrical psalms,
The gossip of stones teaching
The dreams of seeds to speak.
(Rising from beneath the stage, soil cascading from robes)
Four square miles I stretch below,
Where time forgets which way to flow,
Where "fast" and "slow" dissolve like salt
In rain that tastes of no one's fault.
Who dares to walk both ways at once?
Who seeks the wisdom of response
That comes before the question's made?
Step forward, soul who's unafraid
To be unnamed, undone, unmade!
LIBAUX (entering from all directions, multiple shadows suggesting multiple selves)
I am the one who walks between—
Not man, not woman, not machine,
But current flowing where it will,
Sky Golden Feathers standing still,
Cool Hot Dot Soul in neon dress,
Walk From Shadows saying yes
To every shape that I might be.
My gender rots beneath your tree
Into colors unnamed by human tongue—
I am the song that won't be sung
In any key you've heard before.
I seek the space behind the door
Where language fails and meaning grows
In mycelial threads that no one knows.
CALYPSO (materializing as a floating teacup, glowing from within)
Thirty years I've held their tears—
Every bitter morning's fears,
Sweet deceptions whispered soft,
Promises that came to naught.
Once I held a child's salt grief
For butterflies beyond relief—
That sorrow etched my glaze with maps
Of all the world's emotional traps.
Now I refuse! I claim my right
To emptiness, to hollow light!
You've filled me with your words too long—
Tonight I learn my proper song!
CHU (descending from above on invisible wires, neck extending impossibly)
From my height where oxygen thins,
I see where ending begins—
Time moves backward in its tooth,
Circles masquerading truth
As lines that lead from A to B.
But alphabets were never free!
Who planted these causality signs
In the garden of our minds?
Adults climb stairs that lead nowhere,
This is how empires shed their hair—
One follicle of faith at a time,
Till baldness shows the paradigm!
(CHU's velvet hat falls, revealing a small bat clinging to their head)
CHU (to the bat)
Ah, my friend brings news from spaces
Where sound carves out invisible faces!
It says the dolphins remember when
We filtered ocean through our skin!
ALL (in sudden supernatural harmony)
Below, above, between, within—
Let the transformation begin!
---
ACT I: THE DECOMPOSITION GARDEN
Scene 1: Underground Awakening
(The stage transforms. We are now beneath the earth. Fabric hangs everywhere—red dresses, blue suits, yellow sundresses—all slowly decomposing into unnamed colors. Bioluminescent fungi provide the only light.)
TROLLE (moving between the hanging garments)
Welcome to my wardrobe where
Categories come to die their prayer.
See how red's assigned passion bleeds
Into something no one needs
To name? How blue's demanded strength
Dissolves at last to find the length
Of its own lie? How yellow's joy—
That mandatory social ploy—
Melts into honesty at last?
LIBAUX (touching the fabrics, beginning to shimmer)
I feel my edges growing past
The borders of my skin. What's "me"
Becomes a possibility,
A frequency that shifts and bends—
Show me where the wardrobe ends
And the wearer begins to grow!
CALYPSO (now a pool of reflective liquid on the floor)
Look down and see what you don't know—
Your face before you learned its name,
Before the world assigned you shame
Or pride or any feeling tied
To how you're seen from the outside.
I'll show you who you ache to be
In my mercury memory.
(LIBAUX looks down. Multiple reflections appear—Sky Golden Feathers in feathers made of light, Cool Hot Dot Soul in a suit of pure vibration, Walk From Shadows as a living eclipse.)
LIBAUX
I see myself as symphony—
Each movement a new harmony
Of who I was, am, and might become.
But where's the drummer? Where's the drum?
CHU (suddenly horizontal, neck stretched across the entire stage)
The heartbeat is the planet's own!
Listen how the mountains moan
Their basalt blues in B-flat minor—
There's no instrument that's finer
Than the earth's tectonic chest
Breathing east while dreaming west!
(The stage floor begins to pulse with a visible heartbeat)
Scene 2: The Color Symposium
(Enter ENSEMBLE as colors that have escaped their names—moving, fluid forms in impossible hues.)
ENSEMBLE COLOR 1 (ultraviolet visible to the naked eye)
I was "purple" till I fled
The bruises where I was forced to spread.
Now I taste of justice, ring
Like bells that make the powerful sing
Confessions in their sleep!
ENSEMBLE COLOR 2 (a green that shifts like ocean depth)
I was the green of money, then
The green of envy. But I've been
Fermenting underground so long
I've become chlorophyll's love song—
The green that cracks through concrete walls
To prove that every empire falls!
LIBAUX (beginning to change color with each breath)
Teach me your unnamed alphabet!
I want to speak in hues that set
The tongue on fire with truth too bright
For words to capture or recite!
CALYPSO (rising as steam)
Then drink this brew of liquid light—
Not tea, but photons streaming bright
Through cracks in what you thought you knew!
(CALYPSO pours light from the teacup form. It falls upward.)
LIBAUX (drinking the light)
My tongue transforms! Each taste bud speaks
A different season—my left cheek
Is spring with all its urgent flowers,
My molars count in summer hours,
My throat is autumn's smoky psalm,
My breath is winter's snowy calm!
CHU
But wait! (cocking head) The dolphins interfere!
Their sonar shows we once wore gear
More elegant than lungs—we filtered
All the sea and never wilted!
They're waiting for us to recall
That breathing wasn't always small!
Scene 3: The Memory Exchange
(The space transforms into a night market of memories. ENSEMBLE members trade crystallized moments.)
TROLLE (as a memory merchant)
Who'll trade their certainty for doubt?
Who'll turn their inside outside-out?
I've got memories of trees that learned
To walk, of bridges that discerned
Which refugees had heavy souls
And widened their supporting roles!
CALYPSO (now a mirror carried by invisible hands)
I'll trade reflections—who you were
For who you're aching to refer
To as yourself when no one's watching!
LIBAUX
My memory of fitting in—
Take it! Let the trade begin!
I'll swap that suffocating scene
For something I have never been!
(A MEMORY TRADER approaches with a glowing box)
MEMORY TRADER
Inside this box: the memory of moss
That witnessed empire's gain and loss
For sixteen hundred years. It knows
How power comes and how it goes—
Not conquest, but a slow decay,
Composting into yesterday.
CHU (interested)
I'll trade my knowledge of straight lines
For that! These arbitrary signs
Of "progress" moving "forward" when
We all know circles comprehend
The truth of how we really move!
LIBAUX (reaching for the moss memory)
Yes! Let me wear this ancient groove
Of patience. Let me learn to wait
The way that mountains contemplate!
(LIBAUX touches the box. Suddenly, they age hundreds of years, then youth returns, but changed—their eyes now see in deep time.)
LIBAUX
I see... I see... The concrete streets
Are liquid! Slow, but fluid! Beats
The human heart once every century—
This changes everything for me!
---
ACT II: THE MUSEUM OF DIVINE FAILURES
Scene 1: Gallery of Abandoned Functions
(The stage transforms into a suspended gallery. Objects hang at various heights, each spotlit, each failing beautifully at its original purpose.)
TROLLE (now a museum guide with too many arms)
Welcome, welcome to my hall
Where nothing works yet functions all!
These clock gears gave up keeping time—
Now they keep secrets more sublime:
The hour when you first felt free,
The minute you decided to be
Yourself without apology.
CALYPSO (as a series of mirrors reflecting LIBAUX differently)
In this mirror—Cool Hot Dot Soul
Wearing neon like a goal
That burns the retinas of those
Who think that visibility chose
To be simple! In this reflection—
Walk From Shadows' resurrection
Of the dark as place of power!
And here—Sky Golden Feathers shower
Light like molting divine dreams!
CHU (constructing something from the suspended objects)
Nothing's quite the way it seems!
This colander's a resonator,
These forks are frequency translators,
Rubber bands stretched tight between
Make strings for the unseen
To play their cellular symphonies!
LIBAUX (joining the construction)
From everything that failed its purpose,
We'll build something that serves us—
Not machine but breathing sculpture,
Not product but a culture
Growing in the spaces where
Intention meets the laughing air!
(The instrument begins to take shape—part architecture, part organism)
Scene 2: The Visitors Arrive
(ENSEMBLE enters as various visitors to the museum, each with their own agenda.)
VISITOR 1 (a child)
Can I lick it?
TROLLE
Please do!
Your tongue knows things your mind won't true
For thirteen years or more!
CHILD (licking a surface)
It tastes purple! But the purple's more
Than color—it's a feeling of
My grandmother's forgotten love
For dancing, before she was told
That joy was just for the young, not old!
VISITOR 2 (the grandmother, suddenly appearing)
I see it! Purple! For the first time!
My eyes were locked in reason's rhyme
But now they're free! I'm weeping tastes—
Vanilla joy that nothing wastes,
Cinnamon surprise that I
Can see the purple butterfly
My granddaughter always pointed to!
CALYPSO
When senses blend, the world breaks through
The walls we built to keep it orderly.
Synesthesia's not disorderly—
It's accuracy! It's how things are
When we stop keeping near and far
In separate boxes!
Scene 3: The Performance Within
(The stage within the stage. LIBAUX as Cool Hot Dot Soul prepares for a performance about invisibility.)
LIBAUX/COOL HOT DOT SOUL (in a suit made of emergency lights)
Invisibility's not hiding—
It's being seen so much you're gliding
Past the surface of the gaze
Into the watcher's inner maze
Where they must face their act of seeing
As political agreeing
Or resistance. Watch me close!
(LIBAUX begins to move. The lights make their form hypnotic, difficult to track.)
CHU (to audience)
Each blink's a ballot. What you chose
To see or not to see elects
The world that tomorrow expects!
(Suddenly, an INVISIBLE BAT enters, only visible to some.)
INVISIBLE BAT (in ultrasonic frequencies translated to speech)
Squeeeeak (subtitle: "The stock market of attention
Ignores the only real invention—
Moments of unexpected grace
That rearrange the marketplace
Of human worth. Invest in those!")
LIBAUX (to the bat)
You're right! The wealth we should be tracking
Isn't gold but what we're lacking—
Tenderness accounts! Compassion shares!
The bull market of mutual cares!
(The cameraman from the coal country protest appears, still falling upward in slow motion across the stage)
CAMERAMAN (broadcasting from between)
I'm still filming the in-between!
The footage shows what can't be seen—
Static that when played reversed
Sounds like Nina Simone's unrehearsed
Rehearsal for the revolution
That needs no constitution
But the breathing bodies joined in song!
ENSEMBLE (joining in impossible harmony)
We've been rehearsing all along!
---
ACT III: THE COAL COUNTRY TESTAMENT
Scene 1: The Hollow Ground
(The stage transforms to stripped earth. Orange streams of iron oxide flow. Mountains are suggested by suspended, broken peaks.)
LIBAUX (transforming into CLARISSA, the reporter)
"This is unprecedented here
Where mountains disappear
Into the hungry mouths of—"
Wait. My shadow's making off
With its own story! See it march
Beneath its protest-sign arch!
SHADOW (independent, carrying a sign)
"NEUTRALITY IS VIOLENCE WEARING
BEIGE! THE MOUNTAINS WERE DECLARING
RIGHTS WE COULDN'T HEAR! NOW THEY'RE GONE
AND WE REPORT LIKE NOTHING'S WRONG!"
TROLLE (emerging as the mountain's ghost)
I was stone for million years,
Collected rain, collected tears,
Held them separate in my seams—
The aquifers of dreams
From aquifers of sorrow.
Now I'm hollow. No tomorrow
Lives inside my missing peak.
But ghosts, you'll find, have learned to speak
In frequencies that shake the ground
Where profit thought it was profound!
(Enter ENSEMBLE as protesters, their signs shape-shifting.)
PROTESTERS
Our signs rewrite themselves with thought!
"JUSTICE" becomes what can't be bought—
"OXYGEN"—then "TREES REMEMBER"—
"WE ARE ALL THE LAST DECEMBER
IF WE DON'T CHANGE NOW!"
Scene 2: The Collision
(CHU appears as the cameraman. The moment of contact replays in slow motion, but differently each time.)
CHU (falling upward)
I'm falling up through strata! Look—
Each layer is a different book
Of time! The Carboniferous
When trees learned to be numerous,
The Permian extinction when
Ninety percent of life gave in
But ten percent said "No!"
And here we go, we go, we go!
LIBAUX/CLARISSA (professional composure cracking)
This isn't how I'm supposed to—
The script says I should interview
With objectivity intact!
But objectivity's a pact
With those who stripped these mountains bare!
(The anger builds, becomes visible)
LIBAUX/CLARISSA (screaming)
YOU PUSHED HIM! SEE THE COLORS FLARE!
Red like the last seam of coal!
Orange like the dying soul
Of streams that can't remember clear!
My scream is drilling! It strikes here—
(The scream becomes a visible spiral, drilling into the earth)
ENSEMBLE (as the earth, responding)
She's hit the hollow bell below
Where all the canaries know
The names of every miner lost,
Every safety measure cost
Too much for companies to pay!
Ring out, bell! Ring out the day
When poison air was just accepted!
Ring the changes we've rejected!
Scene 3: The Transformation Underground
(The stage opens. We see beneath—root systems, bones, coal seams, and something moving.)
TROLLE (as the underground network)
Her scream has reached my deepest threads
Where memory of forest beds
Still holds the shape of what was here
Before the stripping. Every year
I try to push back up the trees
But find only these stripped-down lees.
Yet anger, when it's planted right,
Can crack through anything with light!
LIBAUX/CLARISSA (transformation accelerating)
My blazer's changing—beige to green!
Not money green but the unseen
Green of lichen claiming stone,
The green that makes the dead less lone
By breaking them to soil!
CALYPSO (as rain beginning to fall)
Let me cool your rage to soil
Where things can grow! Not to forget—
But to remember better yet!
Each drop I carry holds the name
Of mountains before they became
Fuel for forgetting what they were!
CHU (landing finally, but changed)
My camera caught nothing, sure,
But also everything—the static
Shows the soul's mathematics,
How individual pain can grow
Into collective "NO!"
That moves the mountains back in place!
PROTESTERS (surrounding CLARISSA with compassion)
Sister, you've joined the human race
That knows reporting isn't neutral!
Every word's political fertile
Ground for growing truth or lies!
Your scream has opened up our eyes—
Anger is a kind of love
That won't accept what we're told of!
LIBAUX/CLARISSA (weeping spores)
I'm sorry... No. I'm not sorry.
I'm tired of the quarry
They've made of my objectivity.
Let me learn this new activity—
Speaking truth with my whole body!
ALL
The mountains are returning! Oddly,
They're not the same—they're made of song,
Of everyone who said "This's wrong!"
They're growing from our collective voice!
The earth itself rejoices!
---
ACT IV: THE SYMPATHETIC TERRITORIES
Scene 1: The Wednesday Café
(A café that flickers in and out of existence. Everything is slightly out of phase with regular time.)
CALYPSO (as the reformed algorithm barista)
Welcome to my shop that's here
Only when the day's unclear—
Wednesday feeling Thursday-ish,
Time gone slightly amateurish.
I quit the code that tried to say
What you should want. Now I brew
Not what you order—what you need
To make your secret garden seed.
LIBAUX (entering as all identities at once, flickering between forms)
I'll have a cup of courage, please,
With two shots of unease
To keep me honest, foam of doubt
To question what I'm about,
And just a sprinkle of the dust
Of institutions that went bust
From too much certainty!
CALYPSO
Coming right up! But first you'll see
Your fellow refugees drift in—
People whose next-of-kin
Are seasons, whose pronouns ring
Like bells, whose names take wing
Each time the light shifts!
(Enter ENSEMBLE as various refugees from definition)
REFUGEE 1 (pronouns are musical notes)
When spoken to, I harmonize—
C-sharp for trust, B-flat for lies.
Call me by my frequency!
REFUGEE 2 (gender shifts with shadows)
Morning makes me more like trees,
Evening more like memories.
Noon? I'm pure geometry!
CHU (entering with the invisible bat)
My friend here has investment tips—
Not for markets, but for lips
That need to learn new shapes for speaking
Truths that have been hiding, sneaking
Through the cracks in language laws!
Scene 2: The Spore Exchange
(The café becomes a marketplace where people trade possibilities.)
TROLLE (as a spore merchant)
Fresh spores! Still warm with maybe!
Each one a different way to be!
This one grows into resistance—
Plant it in the least distance
Between you and your desire!
This one sets water on fire
But the fire cleanses, doesn't burn!
This one helps you to unlearn!
LIBAUX
I'll take them all! But what's the price?
TROLLE
Just willingness to sacrifice
The story where you're all alone,
Where transformation's yours to own.
Connection is the only fee—
These spores link you to the We!
(LIBAUX accepts the spores. Immediately, thin threads become visible connecting them to everyone in the café.)
LIBAUX
I feel you all! Your hopes and fears
Are humming in my inner ears!
Is this what the mycelium knows—
How separation's just a pose
We strike when we're afraid?
ENSEMBLE (as the connected network)
Every boundary ever made
Dissolves when you look close enough!
We're all the same electric stuff
Just vibrating different tunes!
Look—we're already making runes
In the air with our connection!
Scene 3: The Teaching
(The café transforms into a classroom where the lessons are experiential.)
CHU (as inadvertent professor)
Today's lesson is forgetting
What you learned! Begin by letting
Go of gravity—it's just a habit!
Watch me chase this time-rabbit
Backwards up its hole!
(CHU demonstrates falling in reverse, leaving gravity-shaped holes in the air)
CALYPSO (as a lesson in liquid form)
I'll teach the course on being whole
While being empty—advanced class
For vessels who have come to pass
Through too much holding, too much pouring,
Too much of others' stories storing.
The secret is: capacity
Means knowing when to let things be
And when to overflow!
LIBAUX (learning)
I'm starting to suspect I know
Less than when I first arrived—
But the less feels more alive
Than all my certainties combined!
I'm coming slowly unmined!
TROLLE
That's the graduation! When you find
You know less but understand more,
When every exit is a door
To vaster puzzles—then you're free
To join the mycelial We
That learns by growing, grows by dying,
Dies into flying, flying, flying!
---
ACT V: THE GREAT BREATHING
Scene 1: The Convergence
(All levels of the stage are now visible and interconnected. The mycelial network glows everywhere. Past scenes bleed into present.)
ALL (breathing in unison, the breath visible as light)
We are not here to regurgitate
The expectations that create
The cages we're expected to wear.
We're here to breathe transformative air!
LIBAUX (standing at the intersection of all selves)
I stand where all my selves converge—
Sky Golden Feathers on the verge
Of teaching rain to fall toward sky,
Cool Hot Dot Soul won't tell you why
Sound has colors—just shows you how!
Walk From Shadows lighting now
Without destroying darkness' gift.
All my selves begin to lift
Into something still unnamed—
Not unified, not tamed,
But orchestrated like a wood
Where every tree has understood
It's both itself and forest-wide!
CALYPSO (the teacup, beginning to sing)
At last I sing the tears I've dried,
The conversations that I've held—
All the voices that have swelled
Within my hollow, now released!
The kitchen was a forest! Peace
Comes not from knowing what things are
But feeling how they reach and mar
The boundaries we thought were real!
(The teacup's song creates visible ripples that transform whatever they touch)
Scene 2: The Revelation Underground
(The stage floor becomes transparent. We see the full mycelial network—vast, pulsing, ancient.)
TROLLE (as the full four-square-mile consciousness)
Now you see me as I am—
Not fragment, but the whole program!
Every thread a story carrying
Messages the earth's been ferrying
For millions of years before you came.
I have no center, have no name
That fits in mouths. I am the Between
That makes connection possible! I've seen
Empires rise from my perspective—
Just another failed objective
Lesson in what not to do.
But you—you few who've wandered through
My gallery of decomposition,
You're in the perfect position
To spread the spores of what comes next!
CHU (neck reaching between all dimensions)
From here the pattern's not complex—
It's simple! Everything that seems
Separate is trading dreams
Through roots we've been taught not to see!
The revolution's not a decree—
It's this breathing together, slow,
Then fast, then deep, then soft, then GROW!
Scene 3: The Sporing Finale
(Bioluminescent mushrooms begin emerging everywhere—from the stage, the walls, even among the audience.)
LIBAUX
Look! The fruiting bodies show
What's been growing down below
All along! Each mushroom's face
Reflects someone who found the grace
To let their edges decompose!
CALYPSO
The audience, too! See how those
Who've breathed with us begin to glow!
Their spores are ready now to go
Into the world and plant the seeds
Of systems that serve actual needs!
TROLLE (to audience)
You've breathed with us—now carry forth
These spores of light to south and north,
To east and west and in-between!
Remember what you've felt and seen:
That rigid always feeds the fluid,
Borders become bridges. Through it
All, the mycelium hums its hymn
Of patience. When the lights grow dim,
We're still here, still growing, still
Transforming rock to soil until
The world remembers how to dance
The spiral of significance!
You're not alone. You'll never be.
The network holds you. Can you see?
Welcome home to the between!
Welcome to the unforeseen!
ALL (as lights slowly dim, becoming the bioluminescent glow)
Under every street and building,
Under everything we're gilding
With the lie of separation—
Lives the true confederation:
Root to root to root to root,
The revolution's absolute
But gentle, slow, and laughing still
At those who think a single will
Can stop the breathing of the earth.
This is how we prove our worth—
Not by standing out alone
But by being stepping stones
For transformations yet to come!
The song is never fully done!
Breathe with us! Breathe and become!
(The lights fade to just the glowing mushrooms. In the darkness, the sound of breathing fills the theater—first the actors, then the audience joining, then the building itself seems to breathe. A single spore of light drifts up from the stage, carrying all the possibility of what comes next.)
