Vocal Symbiosis ~ Inside Sun Moon's Intricate Grace ~ Version Two

Words / 2025 Variety

Listen close, I'll tell you how she learned to disappear,
Sun Moon's voice—a haunting that you taste more than you hear,
Vocal intonations bending like a prayer that's lost its way,
Tonal inflections telling truths she's too afraid to say.

Her breath becomes the punctuation, sharp between each phrase,
Inhalations audible and gasping through the haze,
Like memory clawing surface-ward from somewhere down below,
Each whispered syllable a secret only shadows know.

She never lands exactly where the note's supposed to be,
Slides microtonal, falling, like she's drowning in the key,
Pitch elastic, stretching downward, melancholic, woozy, slow,
Bending under expectation, then resolving—letting go.

T's and K's like shattered glass, consonants that cut and break,
S's hissing serpentine with all that is at stake,
But then she softens syllables until they turn to air,
A line that disintegrates before it gets you there.

Volume is her cinema, each phrase a careful arc,
Starting quiet, swelling midway, fading to the dark,
Near silence as a vanishing, a ghost that steps aside,
Whispers something dangerous, then runs away to hide.

No roaring in this frozen song, just spectral ice that cracks,
Revealing tiny trembles in the spaces between facts,
A voice that sometimes fractures just to show you what's beneath,
The poise that hides the breaking in the pauses where we breathe.

She waits a beat too long before she lets the next line start,
Building tension, building questions in the listening heart,
Cadence always delayed and dancing just beyond our reach,
A story re-looping, always learning what it cannot teach.

When silence comes, it's not an absence—no, it has its say,
It mourns and speaks and waits for us to fill what's gone away,
Against sparse instrumentation, off-kilter and alone,
Her voice becomes the only tempo anybody's known.

She excavates from language what the skin tries hard to hide,
From trembling places caught between the theater and tide,
Between memory and moment where the ghosts learn how to sing,
Sun Moon voices what's buried in the underneath of everything.

This is voluntary madness, this is sweetness gone insane,
This is how you sing the truth by never quite explaining,
How you make the haunted beautiful, the broken somehow whole,
How you teach a jazz standard to excavate a soul.

(pause)

And in that final silence where her voice has slipped away,
We realize we're the ghosts that she's been singing all this day,
Trapped in acts of remembering, unraveling our seams,
While Sun Moon keeps on breathing in the spaces between dreams.

Listen close, I'll tell you how she learned to disappear,
Sun Moon's voice—a haunting that you taste more than you hear,
Vocal intonations bending like a prayer that's lost its way,
Tonal inflections telling truths she's too afraid to say.

(voice drops, slower)
I heard her once in November... the room smelled like old rain...

Her breath becomes the punctuation, sharp between each phrase,
Inhalations audible and gasping through the haze,
Like memory clawing surface-ward from somewhere down below,
Each whispered syllable a secret only shadows know.

She never lands exactly where the note's supposed to be,
Slides microtonal, falling, like she's drowning in the key,
Pitch elastic, stretching downward, melancholic, woozy, slow,
Bending under expectation, then resolving—letting...
(pause)
...no, not resolving. Just letting go.

T's and K's like shattered glass, consonants that cut and break,
S's hissing serpentine with all that is at stake,
But then she softens syllables until they turn to air,
A line that disintegrates before—
(voice cracks slightly)
—before anyone can care.

Volume is her cinema, each phrase a careful arc,
Starting quiet, swelling midway, fading to the dark,
Near silence as a vanishing, a ghost that steps aside,
Whispers something dangerous, then runs away to hide.

(almost whispering)
My mother used to sing like that... before she stopped singing at all...

No roaring in this frozen song, just spectral ice that cracks,
Revealing tiny trembles in the spaces between facts,
A voice that sometimes fractures just to show you what's beneath,
The poise that hides the breaking in the pauses where we breathe.

She waits a beat too long before she lets the next line start,
(demonstrate with actual pause)
...
Building tension, building questions in the listening heart,
Cadence always delayed and dancing just beyond our reach,
A story re-looping, always learning what it cannot teach.

When silence comes, it's not an absence—no, it has its say,
It mourns and speaks and waits for us to fill what's gone away,
(voice breaking slightly)
God, how many times have I sat in that silence myself?
Against sparse instrumentation, off-kilter and alone,
Her voice becomes the only tempo anybody's known.

She excavates from language what the skin tries hard to hide,
From trembling places caught between the theater and tide,
Between memory and moment where the ghosts learn how to sing,
Sun Moon voices what's buried in the underneath of everything.

(slower, more tired)
This is voluntary madness, this is sweetness gone insane,
This is how you sing the truth by never quite explaining,
How you make the haunted beautiful, the broken somehow whole,
How you teach a jazz standard to excavate a soul.

(long pause, barely audible)

And in that final silence where her voice has slipped away,
We realize we're the ghosts that she's been singing all this day,
Trapped in acts of remembering, unraveling our seams,
While Sun Moon keeps on breathing...
(voice fades)
...in the spaces between dreams.

(almost inaudible)
Sometimes I wake up at 3am and I swear I can still hear her breathing.
