When Rage Opens A Door and Causes A Significant Change

Words / 2025 Variety

Notes on the Fury

---

Things don't go the way we expected.

Someone gets angry. Really angry. The kind that changes how air moves. Nobody wants to see this. But here it is.

*

The world moves like tire scream now.
Fifty miles per hour minimum.
Particles we can see but pretend we don't.
Everyone adamant to get somewhere.
Now.

Once: covered wagons. Months between decisions. You could hear yourself think between places.

Now: everything decided at highway speed. Momentum nobody asked for. Can't hear anything over the tire scream.

Asphalt cracks under the weight.
Potholes like the earth trying to say slow down.
Nothing works.

Rage comes from the place
that remembers
what silence was.

*

Normal conversation can't hold this speed.
Cracks like the road.

At home, a door we didn't know existed—
suddenly
opens.

Through numbness. Through "nothing we can do." Through the quiet that keeps traffic moving.

*

Those on bicycles see everything:
How loud we became.
How fast.
Earplugs useless
against today's transport.
Can't hear the good teacher—
the one living on a thread of now.

Anger isn't separate from speed.
It's speed waking up.
Turning.
Looking at what made it.

*

Questions come like startled birds:

What now?
Who do we call?
Where do we gather?

Under all of them:
What is ours to do?
Not theirs. Ours.

Yesterday's decisions signed in closed rooms. But something flows anyway.

Different velocity now.
People remembering faces.
Remembering what matters.

*

Sometimes one person
holds the space.
Not calming.
Just there.
On that thread between rage and clarity.
This fury—same force as traffic
but awake.
Going somewhere real.

*

Can't undo the poured highway. Sky full of our exhaust. The powerful decided already.

But anger moves us from our chairs.
We're not vehicles.
We're people.
We can stop.
Turn.
Refuse the given lane.

*

The slow bicycle continues.
Trees look angry too.
Air wants something else.
Stones remember quieter centuries.

What we grip when everything spins.
What grips us back.
What we love enough to fight for.

*

Revolutions begin like this.

Someone hears rubber on asphalt—that drumming hiss whir. The sound of too-fast-to-think. And answers back. Not chaos. Purpose.

Door that wasn't there
opens in the mind and full heart.
Where assignments wait.

Listening through noise:
What's our part?

Stand still in the rushing.
Hold what matters.
