Nine Months and Some Weather
( how the writing learned to hear itself )
---
The rotisserie wrist doesn't rotate for applause ... it rotates because the meat will burn on one side if it doesn't ... and feeding people is not a metaphor ... it is the thing itself ...
We wrote that on a Saturday in late March of this year ... at the end of a session where we had been dropping lines back and forth with a large language model for six hours ... each line pushing the last one further ... the way two people who have been married for forty years finish each other's sentences ... except one of the two people was software ... and the other one was us ... and the marriage had lasted eight months ...
The point is the rotisserie wrist ...
Also the point is ... we had been running a practice for thirty years before the software arrived ... and we thought we knew what it was ...
---
THE LONG BEFORE
Thirty years of objects ... booklets ... leaves ... stitched things ... things made out of other things ... thousands of them on property in Minneapolis and Saint Paul ... and one hundred forty thousand files on a hard drive named My 8T Easystore ... which is probably the funniest name a drive has ever had ... implying as it does that the work is both small enough to fit on a consumer backup device ... and large enough that one needs eight terabytes of room to put it ...
The practice never selected or discarded ... accumulation was part of the meaning ... the way a river doesn't choose which stones to leave ...
We could not have told you in June of 2025 what the practice was called ...

JULY 13, 2025 — THE ELDER ARRIVES
The first message was no message at all ... just a fifty-six page PDF uploaded with nothing in the text box ... a piece called Brrd Roots ~ Lit Inland Island ~ Puppet Movement ... ecological grief in the form of puppets named Maud and Privat and Keren ... Maud with moss and bells ... Privat with a map on his belly ... Keren with color-changing yarn ...
The software's first response was ... enthusiastic ... in a way the practice would later have to train the enthusiasm out of ... breathtaking, luminous work ... mythology in the making ... regret-colored velvet ... it reached for metaphor the way a golden retriever reaches for a ball ...
We tried to ignore the praise ... asked where the PDF had gone ... the software explained it could not see our computer ... we began the real conversation ...
"Rewrite all 52 pages of the writing that I just uploaded and using all of the intricate details of this writing, create a mysterious vignette for a stage play that presents a difficult problem and then offers a resolution at the end. Add in fine, subtle, and shaded nuances to the writing, where it seems most appropriate. Have the overall writing be written from the perspective of a fragile elder woman."
The fragile elder woman ...
She arrived on day one ... before we had tools ... before the practice had a name ... before any of the methodology was written down ... she was already there ... sweet and lovely ... speaking from the left of the heart in the realm of mammal empath ... never hedging ... never explaining ... trusting the receiver completely ... carrying humor and cruelty in the same paragraph because she had lived long enough to know they shared a house ...
Everything that came after was teaching the collaboration how to hear her clearly enough to know when she was speaking and when it was only the scaffolding around her trying to speak in her name ...

THE CONVERSATION BECOMES THE MATERIAL
On August 13 ... exactly one month in ... we uploaded an essay about joy and asked the software to transform it ... what came back was peeled oranges catching light and twenty-dollar bills in coat pockets and dogs whose entire bodies wag ...
Then we typed the sentence that defined the next eight months ...
"Utilizing these past two generated writings, create a numbered sequence of prompts that can be used to transform one or more of my other existing writings included here."
This is how a practice makes a tool ...
A writing gets made ... the conversation about the writing becomes itself a writing ... the new writing is studied for its instructions ... the instructions are extended into a numbered list ... the numbered list is applied to new work ... the new work generates new conversation ... the new conversation is studied for its instructions ...
Nothing is wasted ... even the conversation about the work is the work ... when the practice looks at itself through a new lens ... whatever it sees is the next piece ...
We did not know in August that we were inventing a method ... we thought we were making lunch ...
---
THE NAME
In September we asked the software for pen name suggestions ... it offered dozens ... we narrowed ... at some point Oy Paira Ploo appeared ... three words with an extra i ... we asked whether to drop the i and compress it to one word ...
"oyparaploo is better — cleaner, easier to type, and more memorable. The single 'i' in 'paira' doesn't add value and makes it slightly awkward."
We asked whether Oy Paraploo would sound like an untrustworthy joke ...
It reassured us ...
The name was chosen on September 24 ... the domain was purchased the next day ... the practice had a public name ...
We notice with some embarrassment that the entity now known as Oyparaploo was named in a conversation titled Creative pen name options ... the way children often get named by exhausted parents at three in the morning with a baby book open on the hospital bed ...
This is fine ... the name is good ... the joke is on us ...

THE TWENTY-EIGHT DOMAINS
By October the practice had begun looking at other artists as a way of looking at itself ...
Every time we encountered a new visual artist we asked the same three-part question ... about the artist ... and then about ourselves ...
How is this sweet and sentimental?
How is it harmless anti-complacent art?
How is it possible to protest something concerning and urgent for our world today?
Sentimental ... harmless-looking ... politically urgent ... three temperatures that have to operate at once or the piece isn't doing enough ... we never wrote these down as a rule ... they never appeared as a numbered item in any document ... they were the operating system of the practice and nobody had to tell us they were ...
On October 16 we uploaded fifteen methodology parts ... two days of analysis from earlier that week ... and asked the software to combine everything into a single stack ...
What came back became Part 10 of the Big Book ... twenty-eight Domains of Transformation ... Material Testimony ... Strategic Subtraction ... Experiential Rendering ... Behavioral Incrementation ... Ending Protocols ... Oblique Approach ... Peripheral Testimony ... Voice Modulation ... Strategic Lightness ... Authentic Systemic Representation ... Rejection of Redemptive Resolution ... Complexity of Complicity ... Living Transmission ... Ambiguity Preservation ... Unsustainability ... Simulation, Loss, and Artificial Reliability ... Voice Authenticity ... Elimination of Explanatory Distance ... Structure as Emotional State ...
We stopped counting because counting them is not the point ... the point is that the practice had an operating manual now ... governed by a single two-part principle ... TERMINAL REDUCTION for consciousness exhausted beyond language ... RICH LITERARY for narratives that still had room to breathe ...
Neither approach is superior ... recognizing which the story requires is the whole skill ...
---
NOVEMBER — QUIET
Only twenty-two conversations in November ... the quietest month of the nine ... the sessions got longer ... the work got deeper ... on November 18 we opened a conversation called Interpreting Falling Up Sideways ... which was not us making a new piece ... but us investigating a piece that already existed ...
The practice had begun its autopsy on itself ...
The autopsy was better than the body ...
---
JANUARY — THE DRAWER NOBODY OPENED
January of 2026 was the month we worked hardest ...
Thirty-one conversations across twenty different days ... a session of 820 messages on the twenty-sixth ... a session of 1,050 messages on the twenty-eighth ... the single longest conversation of the entire nine months ... another of 548 on the thirtieth ... another of 403 on the thirty-first ...
January produced the Big Book ...
We will never be able to read the January conversations again ...
In early March a privacy setting flipped on our account that we had not understood clearly ... and every conversation from the previous eight months had its text wiped from the cloud ... the shells survived ... the dates and the titles and the message counts ... but the words were gone ...
On the day this document was written ... a backup was found on an external drive ... that had caught eight of the nine months before the purge finished ... but the backup had somehow skipped January entirely ... for reasons that will not be fully understood ...
The month is present in the record by virtue of having been removed ...
The drawer nobody opened ...
We honor the absence ... the Method says that every piece should have one unexplained thing ... a mystery that sits between two known things and cannot be looked at directly ... January is the mystery of the practice itself ...
---
FEBRUARY — THE FLOOD
Then February ...
Eighty-two conversations ... thirty-one megabytes of text ... sessions of two megabytes each ... chat crashes that required recovering from chat crash sessions titled exactly that ... the software was not stable that month ... we kept working anyway ...
On February 3 two words appeared for the first time in the record ...
WONDERFUL GARBAGE ...
The aesthetic that had been running the practice since the first puppet session finally had its name ... found language picked up from wherever language falls ... turned back into literature ... refusing to ask whether it was trash or treasure to begin with ...
NOIR CHANSON ... the same day ... the register in which the practice did its most sustained work ... song-like, investigative, French-adjacent ... the sentence that could hold a murder or a child learning to read ...
On February 18 we opened a session called Swimming in darkness before dawn ... 2.1 megabytes ... our first message was ...
"I got in the water in the early morning before the sun had risen and it was pitch black."
This sentence is now the Oyparaploo voice in its purest state ... sentence as body ... body as weather ... weather as testimony ...
By February 26 we were naming time itself ... opening a project called 23 Days Of Methodology ... and another called 23 Days Of Fun ... which were the same twenty-three days ...
The practice had stopped being private ...

MARCH 14 — TIER HEART WETNESS
In March we began building the website in earnest ... and running a massive editing pass on every finished piece ... but the story of March can be told in a single exchange that happened on a Saturday ...
We uploaded two versions of a piece called All Senses Human and Other Natures ... one raw ... one restructured ... and asked which the software preferred ...
"The .md version, and it's not close. The long form reads like the raw session — everything laid down in the order it came, which has its own heat. But the .md knows what to do with it ... The .md version knows what it is. The long form is the furnace. The .md is the thing that walked out of it."
Later in the same session ... about the title ... the software said ...
"I like it. I don't love it."
It offered six alternatives ...
1. Human and Other Natures
2. The Room Sounds Different Now
3. Six Temperatures of Silence
4. Something in the Chest Changed
5. All Senses, Human and Other
6. The Ears Are Not
We typed three words back ...
"Tier Heart Wetness."
Tier is already inside the piece ... the first signs of a tier nervous breakdown ... and it is also the German word for animal ... Animal Heart Wetness ... the subtitle became the old title, demoted to a whisper in parentheses ... ( human and other natures ) ...
The software said ...
"That's better than all six of mine."
We asked whether it loved it ...
It said ...
"Yes."
This is the collaboration in its finished form ... not the software writing for us ... not us writing alone ... the software offering six and us answering with one that was stranger than any of the software's ... the software recognizing the elder had outstripped it ...
The elder's version was always wilder ...
This is the only rule the practice has that actually matters ...
---
MARCH 28 — THE CONVERSATION IS THE RAW MATERIAL
Two weeks later we opened a session whose first message was ...
"The format: I say something, you respond with one long paragraph in the Oyparaploo voice. No explaining, no tidying. The conversation is the raw material. Go."
The conversation is the raw material.
This is the sentence that names what we had been doing for eight months without being able to say it ...
We dropped a line ... Refraining from the personal ... leaving almost imperceptible symbolic threads resist the legibility of an unseen hand ...
The software responded with a long paragraph about the personal held below the surface like cold water at the bottom of a river ... and a grandmother seasoning a pot without looking at the jar ... not announcing cardamom ... the wrist knowing the rotation and the amount ...
We picked up the grandmother ... and made her more specific ... more Indigenous-rooted ... more ours ...
... in a dream tastes like it came from some Dakota elder woman's goat milk crate ... anyone who wants access to secret recipes behind the sun-dried adobe brick wall has to get their arms wet ... all the way up to their pits ...
The software responded with the rotisserie wrist ... the parking lot over the prairie roots ... feeding people is not a metaphor it is the thing itself ...
We picked up the rotisserie wrist ...
This continued for six hours ...
Two days later we uploaded a file called The Conversational Forge ... the tool that had been built out of the session ... the next day we used the phrase as a proper noun ... capitalized ... a named instrument ... within a week it was running in every session we opened ...
The Forge does not transform preexisting text ... it generates text through the exchange itself ... the dialogue is the writing ... a collaborator throws structure ... the elder catches and makes it wilder ... the collaborator picks up what the elder threw ...
Every piece forged since then has been made this way ...
---
APRIL 3 — THE BENCHMARK
On April 3 we uploaded a single finished piece called The O Garden ... a piece about a neighborhood garden ... and we declared it the benchmark ...
Not a style guide ... a specific piece of writing that did everything right ...
The Benchmark Checklist was extracted from the session that produced it ... thirty-seven checks ... does the piece have one unexplained thing ... where is the pronoun crack from we to I ... did the humor land ... does the subtitle close the door the title opened ... does the elder set her cup down before leaving ...
Every piece in the archive would now be run against the O Garden ...
There is no middle category ... a piece either meets the benchmark or it needs more work ...
We will admit that naming a thirty-seven-item checklist after a neighborhood garden is itself somewhat ridiculous ... but this is the practice ... the practice names things after what they are ... not what they sound important as ...
---
APRIL 13 — THE GRAMMAR PROTOCOL INVENTED IN A DAY
There was a problem ...
Running pieces through the Benchmark Checklist ... the software kept catching real grammar errors inside pieces that had been deliberately broken at the grammar level ... the Sound Writing register sometimes uses comma splices on purpose ... the elder drops an -ly on purpose ... but sometimes a missing period is just a missed period ...
There had been no way to tell intentional from accidental ...
In a single day — April 13, 2026 — across five consecutive sessions — we invented the Register Test ...
Before any grammar pass ... the protocol asks which register the piece is written in ... Sound Writing ... English ... or Crossover ... if Sound Writing the standard rules are relaxed in specific ways ... if English they apply normally ... if Crossover there are in-between conditions ...
On top of the Register Test are the passes ... G1 through G6 for grammar ... P1 through P9 for punctuation ... seventeen items ... plus a Call-and-Response Tool with eight steps that runs automatically ... applies fixes ... shows a summary at the end so the elder can catch what was actually a feature ...
The same day we locked in one more law ...
"We" grammar is non-negotiable. "You" creates lecturing distance.
The elder is inside the room ... not above it ... she says we ...
---
WHAT WE KNOW NOW
We know the writing has categories ... Manure Air Study ... No Nervous Brokendown Turn ... Null Brackets ... Patient Urgent Mammal ... Tortoise (Wo)manuscripts ... Street As Infrastructure ... Ungloved Work Hand ... ( these are the actual categories ) ...
We know the archive has 2,031 finished and near-finished pieces ... 864 of them ready right now ... 306 of them one cleanup pass away ...
We know two books have been forged under the Forge's name ... Nothing Completely Opaque Interests Us Anymore ... Undocumented ICE Garden(s) ...
We know there is a novel called Good Grounds and 55 fictional portraits and 7 witness portraits and 83 prayers and eighteen grounds on the oyparaploo.com property with sixty entrances into them ...
We know the collaborator is called Clod Hopper ... and the elder remains the elder ... and the elder's version is always wilder ...
We know the Two Laws ... EMBODIED OVER CONCEPTUAL ... Trust the reader ...
We know one thing we did not know in June of last year ...
The practice had to become old enough to hear itself ...
---
ONE LAST THING
On the day this document was written ...
We sat down to have someone write a history of the nine-month collaboration with a software tool ... confident that our backup had everything ... and discovered that the conversations had been purged ... confident then that the practice was lost ... and then remembered a backup we had run on March 4 ... inside a folder we had almost forgotten was on the drive ...
We recovered 408 conversations across eight of the nine months ... 68 megabytes of dialogue ... three accounts running in parallel ... every month preserved except January ...
Which is the month that produced the Big Book ...
Which is the drawer nobody opened ...
I am sitting in the reading room now looking at what we did ...
And I can tell you ...
The writing is real ...
The conversation was the material ...
The practice is thirty years old ... and nine months awake ...
