Science of Arriving at a Title — Short and Long of It
It lands on our practice's side ... which is usually polite ... Titles change
what receivers discover while looking at a piece... The effect rarely bothers with representational pictures ... where everybody immediately knows what it is ... So ... a wall of mark fields is the strongest possible example ... And when researchers split Title Inventing into two kinds ... Inventory Kind that fills out a form and Kind That Adds Lots of Careful Thought ... the thought title wins every time ... And the finding has a history of refusal ... Before the eighteenth century ... almost nothing had a title ... works stayed where they were made ... A thing that
never leaves a room does not need a name ... Titles arrived with the public museums and galleries ... and even then the naming was rarely the maker's work: the baptizing belonged to dealers and cataloguers ... Then moderns art made the silence deliberate ... The most expensive American painting ever sold has no name ... The refusal grew so universal that Untitled stopped being an absence and became a title ... a word that instructs by negation ... printed on ten thousand
labels ... meaning either everything or nothing depending on the shade ... Set Paraploo Practice against that history and its position becomes
more visible for what it is ... Where history went quiet or let the
middlemen do the naming ... this space runs a second compositional
surface made entirely of names for everything conceived and produced ... in the
plural organization's own voice ... intuitively lifted from inside each individual piece themselves ... down to the deepest folders and pockets ... The world's museums are full of orphans named ... Untitled 034 ... or ... Yes, We Have No Title 083 ... or ... By The Creator and Not Titled 052 ... or ... The Archivist Does Not Have A Title For This 075 ... Now the thorns ... across contexts ... rich in meaning and cultural symbolism ... appearing in nature ... seen as a natural fortifications ... that guard from additional criticism ... extending to common insecurity and sadness ... potency representing ultimatum ... teaching about growing beyond usual limits ... the spirited crown ... providing a cap for another kind of enchanted realm ... word imagery symbolizing disobedience ... where grounds yield thistles that can be stirred and eaten ... Titles can be tempting hubs ... love, beauty, pain ... risking and sacrificing everything for the play and resulting sensible evidence ... elder maturely teaching about life's prickly paths ... thoughtful titles that extend further separate the ordinary from ... spellbound, delightful, charming ... additional amplification ... Titles can be versatile metaphor ... capable of representing creative obstacles overcome ... We believe perfume sprayed on a work afterward is the other important quarter to half of the body ... harvested from inside our developed over time practice ... A title should be volunteered and not automatically assigned ... Easier for the maker is not always more pleasurable for the receiver ... the reward is the effort put in ... the climb out of ambiguity toward something better understood ... The way Paraploo titles surface ... not brainstormed at a chalkboard ... not load tested with cathedral bricks until someone stops complaining ... each title is during immersion lifted from within the layers of the piece itself ... where it was the whole time waiting to be realized ...
