Fourth piece of the river-cluster from the May 2 fun-process
session.

Built call-and-response. Reach whispered *We're at our most
faint payless time of the year*; Clod responded with one
essence-arriving paragraph; Reach metabolized the response
into the piece. Title pulled from the opening line.

The teaching — that going without returns us to the simple
count of what is actually here — extends the river-cluster
from witnessing (Piece C) to taking inventory.

New compound vocabulary and figures:

- The purse empties ... Or ... is stolen — the *or
stolen* changes the register from seasonal hardship
to actual loss. Widens who the piece reaches.
- Length of light thins along with it — *length of
light doing the work daylight* would have flattened.
- Body's furnace asks for more natural gas — body's
furnace literal in a way fuel couldn't reach. The
line sits inside Minnesota winter without naming
Minnesota.
- Mostly unnecessary noise — replaces *the noise of
having it*. Sharper.
- Staples in jars / Comforting warmth in rooms —
two-line litany of what's actually here. Abstract
noun in concrete container, plural for both.
- Soul mate across the lacquered table — replaces
the person across the table. Lacquered makes the
table specific, possibly inherited.
- Filled with concerns to pray for — close. Widens
the piece at the close: here opens out to *the
people they are praying for*. The faint payless time
becomes a moment of communion across two interior
lives.

Image threading:

- The witnessing of Piece C becomes inventory in Piece
D. The river-underneath threading forward into
the simple count of what is actually here.

Companion to: The Big River Is Something Very Deep That
Runs Inside of Us (Piece A), This River Place Does Not
Belong to an Owner (Piece B), We Look Around Every Day At
Things We Did Not Make (Piece C), When We Become Subdued
in Sunlight (Piece E). Five-piece river-cluster from May 2.

We Happen To Be At Our Most Payless Time Of The Year

We happen to be at our most payless time of the year ... the season when the purse empties ... Or ...is stolen ... and the length of light thins along with it ... When every small expense lands hard ... when the body's furnace asks for more natural gas ... And yet underneath the faintness there is something happening ... a ... softening ... a ... shedding ... a ... discovery that what we thought we needed was mostly unnecessary noise ... And the strange grace of going without is the way it returns us ... to the simple count of what is actually here ... Staples in jars ... Comforting warmth in rooms ... Our soul mate across the lacquered table who is also tired ... and filled with concerns to pray for ...
