Companion piece to Oy and O Question of the First Sound (rigor) (5/01).
Built call-and-response. Clod offered the diagnostic seed for a
companion piece that would hold a different question than the
original — not what the name's first sound rigor wants, but what
the name does as sound when transcribed into English approximation.
Reach metabolized the diagnostic into practice voice, then revised
in two passes. The first pass resolved three flagged spots — mirror
gimmick mirror enemy compression set off with ellipses, the visible-
process pour/pourr line cleaned to "Here we decided to turn pour
into pourr," and the parsing of "Pourring our arranged marks near
ploo" confirmed with "our" as intentional possessive. The second
pass produced additional refinements — "type of art" expanded to
"type of artful way of being," "new trajectory of" sharpened to
"alternative trajectory to," "joy" tightened to "delight,"
"exactly" added to the closing landing.
The notation oh~yay~para~pourr arrived through four iterations in
the session — sprout, chute, pour, pourr. Sprout translated the
meaning of ploo (growth, emergence). Chute completed parachute's
etymology (para meaning beside, chute meaning fall). Pour gestured
at ploo's sound through an English word with phonetic similarity.
Pourr roughed pour into practice signature spelling. The trajectory
itself became material the piece carries forward as "an alternative
trajectory to chute slash sprout."
Three practice-internal moves operate inside the notation:
- Tilde as wave-shape pause from oO'open.
- Doubled-letter sound roughing like brrd does to bird, here
making pour into pourr.
- Yay replacing yeah, moving the affective register from the
grown-up Oh Yeah affirmation discovered in Oy and O Question
toward Just(ly) Warming Up's two yays carrying wordless joy
in their most defenseless form. The shift names children's
wordless delight as the closer affective register for the
practice's name approximation.
New compound vocabulary and figures arriving:
- Oh Yay Para Pourr — the etymology notation, sonic mirror of
oyparaploo. Title.
- Wise Bole Meta Seed — opening figure. Bole as tree trunk;
meta seed as seed about seeds. Trunk-level seed-throw.
- Oy und O — the German und replacing the English and. The
connective tissue between the two letters itself sounded,
pulling the Yiddish association forward through pronunciation
rather than declaration.
- Open mouth ... O — embodiment added to the vowel. The O as
mouth shape doing work, not just as letter.
- Peaceful relationship ... type of artful way of being — pair
relationship named as embodied stance rather than as artwork.
- Mirror gimmick ... mirror enemy — paired sound-units holding
mirror as cheap trick and mirror as oppositional force,
both readings held in the compression.
- Manufactured sound — what oyparaploo is, named directly.
- Alternative trajectory to chute slash sprout — names the
iteration ancestors of pourr together as a registered set.
- Pourring out one's heart / Pourring our arranged marks near
ploo — pourr in verb form as image cluster around the close.
- Signature accent — replaces "practice signature." Accent
carrying language-register specificity.
- Earned through use body — close-image. The name as body
that has settled.
Punctuation moves:
- Ellipsis-spacing throughout in single-flow paragraph.
- Question mark "?" appearing twice as standalone punctuation
between phrases — compression where "?" stands in for the
word "Question" from the original title's "Question of the
First Sound."
- Capitalized P in Pourring × 2 for percussive emphasis on
the pour/pourr image cluster.
- Tilde-spaced notation oh~yay~para~pourr discussed in the
methodology gloss alongside space-spaced "oh yay para pourr"
in the body flow.
Pair-thinking with Oy and O Question of the First Sound (rigor).
Two pieces, one name, different positions on sound. The original
held the question of which sound the name should lead with — y or
open mouth O. The companion holds the question of how the whole
name sounds when approximated. The pair could nest as inseparable
companions where neither stands alone, or sit alongside each other
as separable but related. Holding question left open in this
piece — the inseparable-or-alongside decision is not made.
Title carries parenthetical-close form (sounded), pairing
architecturally with (rigor) at the same slot in the original.
Notation in the title puts the move the piece introduces in the
top architectural position the way the original put its question
in the title.
Companion to: Oy and O Question of the First Sound (rigor) (5/01),
oO'open (5/01) — for the tilde wave-pause; Just(ly) Warming Up
(4/29) — for the yay register and the landing image; Oyparaploo
Ground to Air Truth (5/05) — for the practice-name etymology
thread these pieces have been opening.
