Pervasive Loneliness Wobbles Are the Signatures of Our Practice

Words / 2026 Variety

So do you love an old local wood chair that has one leg that is shorter than the other three? ... It wobbles and yes it still holds without a doubt ... The wobble is how you know it's handmade ... The wobble is the signature ... Machines don't wobble ... Machines produce four equal legs and call it furniture and it holds you the way a door is held open by someone who has already forgotten you ... This chair holds you the way a person holds you ... unevenly and with full knowledge of your weight ... It fits everybody who has ever sat down on a piece of furniture and knew sitting down was going to be for a temporary length of time ...

Every weight exists in a special space ... not just on a page or screen ... but in a room where someone has been working with the material of loneliness for decades ... Loneliness sometimes is in our hands as a dull persistent ache ... that isn't just emotional but physical ... Smooth to rough thing that weighs more than it should ... not because of the material but because of what the object remembers ... having to do with racism, sexism, ageism, heterosexism, classism ... Behavioral manifestation of bias ... conscious or unconscious ... that reinforce oppression and inequalities ... You sand loneliness down and what's underneath is more loneliness but with a finer grain ... You build with it because it's what you have ... and what you have is always enough when you've been working with it long enough to know its limits and love them ...

Oyparaploo threads are also thought of as texture ... characters who arrive without backstory don't need one because they're leaving before they arrived ... Savvy was already gone when someone said don't try to fix her ... Mother Junkie was a skeleton pile of plastic crumbs before she got a name ... Pie ehh Lap showed up with salvage yard kindness and no return address ... Hail lost his Lucky and the sentence that says so is the only funeral Lucky gets ... These aren't characters ... They're people who brushed against the practice on their way somewhere else and left a mark the way a hand leaves a mark on a fogged window ... Gone by the time the room warms up ...

Deliberate O pieced failures ... at everything attempted ... loosely subjective ... This is how a practice announces itself to anyone willing to listen sideways ... Not a disclaimer ... A philosophy of making that puts the crack in the bowl before the bowl is finished ... The failure is the design ... The design is what makes it possible to hold anything at all ...

Every thread dropped or redone ... There are rooms that never come back that have a coat still on a chair ... A wool coat ... heavier than it should be ... left by someone who came in from the cold and got warm enough to forget they'd need it again ... Nobody picks it up ... It becomes part of the room ... Visitors start hanging their bags on it ... Children think it's always been there ... The coat becomes furniture before the chair does ... That's how Oyparaploo treats its abandoned threads ... They don't disappear ... They become the floor under whoever shows up next ...

And the signature walls absorbed the voice ... Decades of talking to the work and the work not answering back except in the way the walls changed color and the floor developed paths worn into it by pacing ... The room itself started working and never said a word about it ... You don't always just read and say words ... You sit on domestic strangle holds ... The wrestling move and the household trap at the same time ... Held down by what raised you ... Held together by what almost broke everything in the house ... The hold that keeps you still long enough to hear what the room has been absorbing all these years ...

Oyparaploo isn't just about writing ... it's items built by kindred spirits who whisper to the wood while they're cutting into its form and effecting its surfaces ... They sand it until the grain shows up like a map of somewhere they've never been ... They burn the edges on purpose so the char holds a memory the raw wood couldn't carry ... They leave whole sections unfinished because the unfinished part is where the air gets in ... And the air is what keeps the thing from becoming a coffin ... Stained and unstained sitting next to each other on the same plank ... That's not inconsistency ... That's a maker who knows that the wood has opinions too ...

And yet still nothing seems to be missing ... Our practice understands that completion is a type of myth told by writers who will not admit loss in their lives ... or any kind of healing that usually comes after each loss ... The finished product is a lie agreed upon by people who stopped too early and called it done ... Oyparaploo doesn't stop ... it falls asleep ... and the difference between stopping and falling asleep is the difference between a period and an ellipsis ...

A wrap up admits that it could go on forever and choosing sleep instead is quiet personal protest ... Against productivity that pretends to be purpose ... Against the culture that measures a practice by its output and not by its willingness to stay in the room when the room is empty ... Sleep as resistance ... Rest as the stubbornest thing a thirty year practice ever did ... Lying down is not giving up ... Lying down is the posture of someone who trusts the work enough to close their eyes next to it ...

Oyparaploo does not wish to achieve any type of devotion from their audience ... O does not fully complete its characters or resolve its sound experiments ... They do promise disarmament and intriguing fragmentation ... Sometimes announcements are made and then shortly thereafter abandoned ... like a person who stands up to give a toast and sits back down after the first word because the first word was enough ...

Other things were built in this room before the chair ... A table that was too tall ... A shelf that held everything except what mattered ... A bench that looked beautiful and was impossible to sit on ... Those got taken apart ... Not thrown away ... Taken apart ... The nails were saved ... The wood was restacked ... Some of it ended up in the chair eventually ... The chair remembers being a failed table ... It carries that memory in the grain ...
