Smells Not Right

Words / 2026 Variety

We eat them.

Not with teeth ... The way soil takes what falls on it whether it agreed or not ...

The politicians arrive through screens ... through repetition ... through the hum a voice makes after it has said the same thing long enough to become the wall behind everything else ... We did not sit down to this meal. It is already inside.

And the stomach knows.

That turning. That low refusal the body makes before the mind catches up ... Disgust is not an opinion. Disgust is the gut finishing a sentence the mouth has not started ...

Not just what are we eating. How are we eating ... What do we take in with our eyes that the stomach has to process ... What enters through the ears and settles in the body like a meal we did not order and cannot send back ...

A woman who has cooked for forty years does not call this media literacy ... She calls it this smells wrong ... Her nose was trained by onions and by grief ... both of which announce themselves before they are visible ... She watches her grandchildren swallow things she would not serve to anyone ... Not food ... Noise ... She can see it spoiling them the way bad water works ... slowly ... too slowly to blame on any single glass ...

A kid puts the phone face down at two in the morning. Full and empty ... The body already filed its report ... The mind will get there ... or it will not ...

Someone who grew up where the radio belonged to the government learned to chew before they learned to read ... Challenging what enters was not a theory for them ... It was a way to stay alive ...

Palatable ... The mouth decides ... The mind follows ... We have been pretending otherwise for so long we forgot which one was first ...

The disgust was always information ... We kept giving it other names ...
