Spiceless Revolting Pivot
Five hours at the table and nobody ate.
The dish was served ... The names were in it ... The dates were in it ... What was done to children was in it ... The files sat on the table and the attorney general sat at the table and five hours passed and the food went cold while everyone watched ...
Spice-less.
Bland is a choice someone made in the kitchen a long time ago and now the tongue thinks that is just what food tastes like ...
Digesting a pedophile profile requires a stomach we have not built ... Not the stomach for screen violence or news-cycle outrage ... We have those ... The stomach for sitting with the specific details long enough to understand how the system stored them in a building where people went home at night and made dinner knowing what was in the cabinet they locked before leaving ...
The hearing was supposed to be the digestion.
Five hours ... Lawmakers asking heated questions the way you hold a pepper you are not sure you can eat ... The questions had capsaicin in them ... The questions asked how the Department of Justice handled files that contained what happened to real children ... How redaction efforts failed ... How private information belonging to victims ended up exposed ... How the system built to cover them uncovered them again ...
And the pivot.
Aggressively Pivoting ... That is not a legal strategy ... That is a body turning away from the plate ... Not leaving the table ... Staying and turning ... Answering a question that was not asked because the question that was asked has a taste the mouth is not willing to hold ...
Five hours of turning ... Five hours of the fork moving food around the plate without lifting it ... The hearing was a stomach that refused to contract ... The acids were there ... The enzymes were there ... The material was there ... But digestion requires a motion the body would not make ...
A survivor watches this and understands something the rest of the room does not ... The pivot is not new to them ... They have seen people turn away from what happened to them their whole lives ... At dinner tables ... In offices ... In bedrooms where the turning happened first ... The hearing is just the largest room in which the turning has occurred ... The turning was always this size ...
The redactions that failed ... The private information exposed ... That is what happens when the system pivots so hard it knocks things off the table it was supposed to be protecting ... The aggressive turn has collateral ... It always did ... The collateral has names ... The names were supposed to stay covered ... They did not ... Not because the system could not protect them ... Because the system was too busy turning ...
Spice-less ... Unable to hold the flavor long enough to know what we are tasting ... The profile is the spice ... The details are the heat ... The names and the dates and the what-was-done are the capsaicin ... We keep pivoting away from the plate ... The bland is the only thing the American stomach will accept now ...
The dish is still on the table ... It did not leave when the hearing ended ... It is getting colder but it is still there ... Somebody is going to have to eat it eventually ... Or it sits ... The way all uneaten things sit ... Becoming something else ... Something worse than what it was when it was served ...
