slug: the-big-river-is-something-very-deep-that-runs-inside-of-us
format: ellipsis-spaced three-movement, river-introduction
date: 2026-05-02
register: practice voice metabolizing the river image at depth
status: working draft, awaiting elder's hand
notes: |
First piece of the river-cluster from the May 2 fun-process
session. Five pieces locked separately, threading noted across
them but not merged into one. Each piece carries its own
arrival.

Built call-and-response under the fun-process operating rules
(one paragraph per turn, natural-sounding voice, seed-and-
metabolization). Reach whispered *The big river is something
very deep that runs inside of us*; Clod responded with one
long paragraph; Reach metabolized the response into the
piece. Per the seed-vs-metabolization rule (4/30), Reach's
whisper was the seed, Clod's response was the prompt for
Reach's metabolization, and Reach's metabolized return is the
piece.

Title pulled from the opening line — the practice's title-
from-spine move. No that's not the Torrent Course arrives
as a refusal-line inside the body and stays as a body-line,
not as title.

New compound vocabulary and figures arriving:

- Torrent Course — what this isn't. Refused as the
figure-name in the opening.
- *Provence / Columbia River / Spree River / Cast iron
gated park in Manhattan / Nile / St. Lawrence / Little
Roe / Giant Springs* — geographic compression doing
teaching work. Specific rivers refused or named to
build the figure of the underneath-river by negation
and analog.
- Stop fishing — refusal of the man-who-knew-the-names-
of-fish image, kept as a fishing-instruction inside a
piece about a river. The instruction becomes the line.
- Rough nails Nile — the river name pulled into a
body-figure. Nail and Nile compounded.
- Raw players we will never meet during this lifetime
— what comes upstream. The upstream people figured as
players, raw, lifetime-bounded.
- Mind's eye arriving inside the noticing instruction.
- Edge of the dining room table screen up — the
noticing happening at the table, screen present but
not consulted.
- *Orange yellow hair Low and continuous Something
Else — the sound of the river. Something Else*
capitalized, doing proper-noun work. Not the river
name; the river's signal.
- Cobbled as wet silt and clay — the close. Geological
substrate, not water. The piece ends underneath the
river, in the streambed.

Punctuation moves:

- Ellipsis-spacing throughout.
- Or ... arriving as a structural move inside the
current and Something Else breaths.
- St. Lawrence River compressed inside the breath
where my draft had the actual moving water.

Companion to: This River Place Does Not Belong to an Owner
(Piece B, same session — the next piece in the cluster), We
look around every day at things we did not make (Piece C),
We happen to be at our most payless time of the year (Piece
D), When We Become Subdued in Sunlight (Piece E).

The five river-cluster pieces share a register and an
afternoon. The river underneath this piece threads forward —
the daily noticing, the simple count of what is here,
the bowl in our lap in subsequent pieces are the river
surfacing in different rooms. Threading noted; pieces stand
separately.

The Big River Is Something Very Deep That Runs Inside of Us

This is not the river we crossed once ... while on a bridge in Provence ... not the Columbia River in the photograph ... not the Spree River we read about in a cast iron gated park in Manhattan ... Stop fishing ... The slow moving water that has been there since before we knew it had a ... current ... that doesn't turn over stones ... near the shadows of a cynical and morally ambitious crime ...

Rough nails Nile carries everything that has ever been put into it ... including the things we tried to innocently hoard ... and the things that ... in a very peculiar way ... rolled in by accident ... And the stuff that came in upstream from raw players we will never meet during this lifetime ... The strange thing about this St. Lawrence River is that we only notice it in our mind's eye when we really slow down and permit ourselves to rest without that nicked up phone ...

There it is again at the edge of the dining room table screen up ... Little Roe River flowing from Giant Springs moves the way it always sounds in a mystery novel ... an orange yellow hair Low and continuous Something Else ... that turns every which way ... to be the floor underneath a streambed ... everything cobbled as wet silt and clay.
