Charity says: you are broken ... let me fix you ... Mutual aid says: the system is broken ... let me stand beside you ...
The one who washes feet is greater than the one who sits at the table ... The stranger bleeding on the road matters more than the worship house's schedule ...
The distinction is where the blame lands ... Not on the person without shelter ... Not on the parent without childcare ... Not on the worker without a ride ... The fault belongs to racism ... capitalism ... colonialism ... designed to produce crisis ... and punish people caught inside ...
Tables got overturned for a reason ... Greed invaded the sanctuary ... Profits replaced prayers and care for each other ... The teacher made an intentional mess ...
Mutual aid doesn't stop at a tent or a meal ... It extends the welcome ... You can have what you need without strings ... But would you also like to fight for everyone caught in the cold machinery? ...
This is the difference between service and solidarity ... Service maintains the gap between giver and receiver ... Solidarity closes that gap ... We're all in this together ...
Mutual aid is the part of resistance where we keep each other alive ... food that is good for us ... clean water ... childcare ... a ride to work ... a visit to someone who is incarcerated ...
It's only mutual aid if we're clear about why the crisis exists ... It's not your fault ... it's the present system's fault ...
You don't have shelter because the housing system wasn't built for everyone ... You don't have childcare because the economy doesn't value children enough ... You can't get to your job because your neighborhood was only built for people with cars ...
The present housing system was built on stolen land to profit from scarcity ... With laws designed to keep certain people out of certain neighborhoods ... With rents that rise faster than wages ... With landlords who answer to investors instead of tenants ... The system is working exactly as designed ... Just not for everyone ...
Mutual aid sees all of this and doesn't pretend the crisis is personal ... it exposes systems ... then extends an invitation ...
Here's a tent and safe heater ... No judgment or requirement to prove you deserve it ... It's yours because you need it ...
Mutual aid says: We'd like to get everybody involved because the conditions that are hurting you are hurting all of us ... and we can only change them together ...
Not someday in the future ... Now ...
This is the work of making sure people have what they need to survive while we fight to change what's tearing us apart ...
We are that voice on the other end when the weight gets too heavy to carry alone ... When the ride doesn't come often enough ... or a route doesn't go where you need to be ...
Those of us building the next world will be at the intersections ... handing out what people need to stay alive ... standing with you ...
