New wood grows inward from it ... New bark grows outward from it ... It is the thinnest passage in all of biology and everything on either side of it depends on it being alive ... If the cambium dies ... the tree is dead ... The bark was the last ground ... Now we're one layer deeper ...

Together ... hands dig through the crust ... past the barnacles that cemented themselves to the surface ... and arrive at the cambium ... the living layer one cell thick where everything is made ... The ode is addressed to that layer ... Not to the bark ... Not to the heartwood ... To the cambium ... the passage itself ... the thinnest membrane where growth happens in both directions ...

The falaj feeds the fogón ... The fogón feeds the mammal ... The mammal is wrapped in bark ... The bark is the vessel ... The hold is what the vessel carries in the dark ...

Weir ... a low dam across a river that doesn't stop the water but changes its level and speed ... The passage is the water itself ... It's the quietest act of transformation ... the river on the other side of a weir is the same river at a different speed ...

Untethering ... the rope has been cut ... Whatever was held is no longer held ... Not escape ... escape implies effort ... Untethering is what happens when the binding simply ends ... The thing that was fastened drifts ...

Together ... the most sacred vertical passage in the Americas ... down the ladder ... into the earth ... standing above the hole the ancestors emerged from ... is entered by a body in a state of hyperactivity that is still trying "to be" ... Together ... the restless body rode through two screens ... the Christian cross and the Islamic lattice ... and is still hunting ... Two religions built screens that control what passes between the sacred and the ordinary ... The rood screen lets the blessing cross ... The mashrabiya lets light and air cross ... Neither one stops the hunt ... "Restless" says the passage through both screens didn't resolve anything ... "Rode" says the crossing already happened ... "Hunt" says something is still being pursued on the other side ...

And the two screens are from traditions that have been in conflict for a thousand years ... The ground holds both without choosing ...

What does this ground hold? ...

Concrete ... the material ... Not stone ... not wood ... Poured ... formed ... set ... It doesn't age gracefully and it doesn't apologize ... It is exactly what it is ...

Babilonia ... not Babylon ... The Spanish-Portuguese-Italian spelling ... The hanging gardens suspended above the ground ... And the tower where God scattered the languages so no one could finish what they were building together ... The garden and the confusion are the same city ...

Clerestory ... the high windows in a church wall ... above eye level ... You can't see through them ... They don't give you a view ... They exist only to let light in from above ... The nave fills with illumination that has no visible source if you're standing on the floor ...

Jube ... the screen between the congregation and the altar ... From the Latin "jube, domine, benedicere" ... command ... Lord ... to bless ... The blessing is spoken from the top of the screen ... It separates sacred from common but it's permeable ... sound passes through it ... light passes through it ... the words pass over it ... The wall that divides is the wall that delivers ...

Together ... a concrete structure that leaps through open air ... holds a garden above the ground where languages scatter ... admits light from windows too high to see through ... and places a screen between the sacred and the ordinary that lets the blessing pass ... Modern brutalist material doing medieval sacred work ... The garden of Babilonia is suspended ... not rooted ... and the languages were scattered there ... which is where Oyparaploo has always lived ... The clerestory says light arrives without explanation ... The jube says the division is real and the blessing crosses it anyway ...

What does this ground hold? ...

"Je suis" ... I am ... The most basic sentence in French ... But the passage has been split open ... The architecture has been placed inside the act of self-declaration ...

A postern is the small back gate in a fortress wall ... It's how you leave during a siege ... It's how supplies come in without the enemy seeing ... It's the door nobody announces ... Every castle had one and every castle pretended it didn't ... It lives at ground level ... in the thickness of the wall ...

An oculus is the round opening at the top of a dome ... The Pantheon has the most famous one ... open to the sky ... no glass ... rain falls straight through it onto the marble floor ... It's an eye that never closes ... Light enters vertically ... The building sees upward through it ...

Together ... "I (back door) am (sky eye)" ... The French sentence has been cracked open and two passages inserted into the space between the self and its declaration ... The postern is low ... hidden ... in the wall ... The oculus is the highest opening a building can have ... One is secret ... The other is the most exposed aperture in architecture ... an open hole in the roof ...

And this is the second fragment with broken French ... "La fou du" had wrong grammar ... This one has correct grammar split in half with the architecture of a fortress and a temple shoved between the two words of "I am" ... The self doesn't arrive intact ... It arrives through a back door on the way to an eye in the sky ...

What does this ground hold? ...

"La fou du" ... the fool of ... Broken French ... "La" is feminine ... "fou" is masculine ... the grammar is wrong on purpose ... "Le fou du roi" is the king's jester ... This is the fool of no king ... Just the fool of ...

A threshold is the oldest passage word there is ... It comes from threshing ... the strip of wood that kept the straw on the floor from blowing out the door ... It separates one air from another ... You stand on it and you're in neither room ...

A roji is the Japanese dewy path leading to a tea house ... Every stone is placed to slow you down ... Every turn strips away the world you just came from ... By the time you reach the entrance you've already left everything behind ... The dew on the ground is the architecture ... wet ... temporary ... and you walk through it ...

Together ... the fool walks the dewy path to the threshold ... The most contemplative passage Japanese culture ever designed is being crossed by a madwoman whose grammar doesn't even agree with itself ... The roji was built to prepare the mind ... The fool's mind won't be prepared ... The threshold that separates one world from another gets someone who belongs to neither ... And "La fou du" puts French in front of Japanese ... the passage itself is multilingual ... the way Oyparaploo language has always been ... The fool doesn't translate ... The fool just walks through ...

What does this ground hold? ...

A hyphen in architecture is the small connecting structure between a main building and its wing ... It joins two things that could stand alone ... Like the punctuation mark ... it holds a relationship without merging what's on either side ...

An enfilade is a sequence of rooms with their doorways aligned on a single axis ... You stand at one end and see through every threshold at once ... room after room after room ... all the doors open ... one long sight line running through walls that could have stopped you but didn't ... It's depth made visible ... Every room is private until the doors line up ...

A front porch is the most American threshold there is ... Not inside ... not outside ... You sit there and the street sees you and you see the street ... The door is behind you and you haven't opened it yet ... Neighbors talk here ... Strangers wave ... The weather is present ... It's the space where the house meets everyone it doesn't know ...

Together ... the hyphen links ... The enfilade shows you the whole depth of what's ahead ... every doorway aligned so nothing hides ... The front porch is where you arrive and sit before anything begins ... This ground connects things ... reveals depth through a sequence of aligned openings ... and receives you in the open air before you go in ... The formality of the enfilade collapses into the informality of the porch ... you can see all the way through and you're sitting on a chair outside ...

What does this ground hold? ...

A breezeway is an open-air covered passage between two buildings ... The air moves through it ... that's the whole point ... You're not in either building ... You're in the space that connects them ... and the wind is there with you ...

A cloister is a covered walkway around a courtyard ... usually in a monastery ... It goes in a square and brings you back to where you started ... It's enclosed but open on one side ... the garden is always visible ... You walk and think ... The repetition of the arches is the architecture doing what prayer does ...

Together ... the breeze enters the cloister ... The contemplative enclosed walkway gets air moving through it ... The cloister gives the passage shape and rhythm ... The breezeway keeps it from becoming sealed ... One word is movement ... the other is enclosure ... and the ground they name is both ... a space where you walk in contemplation and the air walks with you ...
