Whether Or Not Justice Can Even Address What Happened
No one can say how this ends.
Doors that are supposed to open.
Might stay shut.
Even when everyone saw what happened—
even when the word for it is murder—
the system asks for something else.
Distance between what occurred
and what can be demonstrated in a room.
Someone weighs evidence.
Someone else drives home and forgets.
Can a state hold a federal officer accountable.
Old maps do not show this territory.
A case this visible
might be exactly what certain people need.
Or might disappear like the others.
A woman was murdered.
The system may or may not respond.
We wait.
Cold does not wait.
