RAINBOW BUBBLES OVER STRUCTURES

Words / 2025 Variety

A Sophisticated Joy Laboratory in Five Accumulations
Experimental Theater Installation for Lyon

---

ARCHITECTURE OF ACCUMULATION

Pre-Show: The Running Joke Initiation
Audiences receive a "Joke Seed" card one week before with incomplete phrase: "In Lyon, even the are ." They fill it in. These become running jokes throughout performance.

Venue: Les Subsistances transformed into five "Joy Labs" where different sophistications of joy are manufactured and tested.

---

ACT ONE: The Category Collision Chamber

Space filled with industrial shelving - geometric blocks sorted obsessively by color/size on left, bubble machines creating rainbow-tinted spheres on right. Clear separation.

MOOR (45, former toy store manager, wearing half-business suit, half-playsuit):
Twenty years organizing joy into aisles.
Ages 3-5 here. 6-8 there. Boys' toys. Girls' toys.
Until one day I saw a grandmother buying building blocks and bubble solution together.
"They don't go together," I said.
"That's why," she replied.

Releases rainbow bubbles over block structures

Watch: Temporary meeting permanent.
Chaos kissing order.
Your brain can't file this properly.
That confusion? That's sophistication being born.

TIKEN (28, they/them, builds structures while inside giant rainbow bubble):
I am category error incarnate.
Too solid for bubbles, too fluid for blocks.
My joy refuses your filing system.

Their block structure deliberately incorporates bubble wands as architectural elements

---

ACT TWO: The Running Joke Accelerator

Walls covered with audience's pre-show cards, adding more throughout

VUSI (67, comedian-philosopher):
First time: "In Lyon, even the rivers are indecisive."
Mild laugh.
Tenth time: Comfortable chuckle.
Hundredth time: Joy without punchline needed.
Watch...

Entire cast repeats variations of one audience submission, each iteration slightly different

ALL:
"In Lyon, even the are ."
Insert actual audience submission
Repeat with variations 20 times rapidly

VUSI:
By repetition fifteen, you weren't laughing at the joke.
You were laughing at the fact of the joke.
The joke became about itself.
That's compound interest.

---

ACT THREE: The Multiplicity Engine

Space transforms - lights, sounds, textures all operating simultaneously

STAN (22, sensory artist):
One joy is poverty.
Watch:

Activates single light - Pleasant.
Adds sound - More pleasant.
Adds smell of bread - Exponentially pleasant.
Adds warm air flow - Geometric pleasant progression.
Adds unexpected rainbow bubble - SYSTEM OVERLOAD OF DELIGHT.

STAN:
Your brain isn't adding.
It's multiplying.
It's making joy chords from joy notes.

Audience experiences all sensory inputs while attempting simple task of stacking blocks

---

ACT FOUR: The Abstraction Gallery

Empty space except for ERNEST with chalk

ERNEST (39, former banker turned philosopher):
Joy from nothing.
Watch.

Draws circle on floor

This is "completion."
Not A completion. THE CONCEPT of completion.
Feel anything? No?

Draws broken circle

This is "incompletion."
Feel the itch to close it?
That itch is abstract joy trying to happen.

Audience invited to draw abstract concepts with physical chalk

ERNEST:
"Justice" doesn't exist.
But drawing it with strangers creates real dopamine.
We're getting high on concepts that aren't things.
Sophisticated creatures, aren't we?

---

ACT FIVE: The Repetition Cathedral

All previous elements combine and repeat

ENTIRE CAST (each performing their signature action on loop):
- MOOR: Releasing rainbow bubbles over structures
- TIKEN: Breaking categories
- VUSI: Repeating the running joke
- STAN: Layering sensory inputs
- ERNEST: Drawing abstractions

This continues for 10 full minutes without variation

MOOR (finally breaking pattern):
Minute one: You watched.
Minute three: You got bored.
Minute five: You got angry.
Minute seven: You surrendered.
Minute ten: You found the variations.

That journey? That's sophistication.
Seeing differences in sameness.
Finding complexity in simplicity.

---

FINALE: The Accumulated Joy

All elements simultaneously - rainbow bubbles, structures, jokes, multiplicities, abstractions, repetitions

ALL (to audience):
Your brain is now processing:
- Seven category violations
- Forty-three running joke iterations
- Sixteen simultaneous sensory inputs
- Five abstract concepts
- Infinite repetitions

This is sophisticated joy.
Not better than simple joy.
Just using more brain.

Each audience member receives a building block and rainbow bubble solution

MOOR:
Take these home.
Use them incorrectly.
Your sophistication diploma.

IMAGISTIC AMPLIFICATIONS OF THE JOYFUL BODY

The Rainbow-Structure Nervous System
Your neurons fire in two modes: digital (on/off, like blocks snapping) and analog (gradients, like rainbow bubbles morphing). Sophisticated joy requires both systems simultaneously - your brain literally becomes a hybrid processor, part computer, part prism.

The Compound Interest Hippocampus
Running jokes create physical pathways in your hippocampus. Each repetition deepens the groove, like water carving canyon. By the 50th iteration, the neural pathway is so efficient it fires before conscious recognition - you're laughing before you know why.

The Multiplicity Cortex Storm
When processing multiple joy inputs, your entire cortex lights up like a thunderstorm - different regions firing in patterns that create interference patterns. These patterns are unique to each person, like neural fingerprints of your joy capacity.

The Abstraction Endorphins
Your brain releases specific endorphins for pattern recognition that are chemically distinct from physical pleasure endorphins. They bind to different receptors, creating what researchers call "cognitive euphoria" - getting high on understanding itself.

The Repetition Myelin Sheath
Repeated movements cause oligodendrocytes to wrap myelin around specific neural pathways, making them faster. The 1000th repetition of a joy-creating action literally travels faster through your nervous system than the first - you become superhighway for that specific delight.

The Category Error Anterior Cingulate
When experiencing category violations (rainbow bubbles + geometric structures), your anterior cingulate cortex - the brain's conflict detector - fires rapidly then suddenly stops, creating a neural "relief laugh." Your brain enjoys its own confusion resolution.

The Sophistication Cascade
Complex joy triggers top-down and bottom-up processing simultaneously. Sensory data rises while conceptual frameworks descend, meeting in the thalamus where they create what neuroscientists call "cognitive fireworks" - measurable bursts of synchronized neural activity.

The body broadcasts sophisticated joy differently than simple joy - it's full orchestra versus single instrument, oil painting versus watercolor, novel versus haiku. Both necessary, both available, both happening right now in your beautifully complex nervous system.
