Small Vessels for What Remains (Revised)

"A visitor's witnessing"

I saw someone today smell their ex's sweater in a thrift store, then buy it. Three years after the breakup. This is grief - love that doesn't know where to go, so it goes to Goodwill.

We've found something maybe - where sorrow intertwines with grace. Where you ugly-cry but still notice the sunset. This tenderness where sorrow doesn't cancel beauty but deepens it. Like how food tastes better when you've been too sad to eat.

I'm learning alongside others who don't know what to do with loss. The widower who still makes two cups of coffee. The mother who can't change her daughter's room. We're finding paths or paths are finding us. Not toward meaning but toward... continuing. Learning to love stained fragments - screenshots with timestamps, voicemails never deleted.

These pieces as complete beings. Each broken person whole in their specific damage. We're all provisional. Beta versions of ourselves, constantly updating but never fixed. Each person part of something larger we can't see. Like pixels in a image too big to comprehend.

There's incomplete freedom in this. Like finally giving up on inbox zero. When you stop trying to hold water, just let it run through. When you stop trying to process grief and just let it live with you. Not capturing, just experiencing.

You write griefs with actual ink. Permanent but somehow still revisable, like tattoos you add to. These notes will change meaning over time. "Forever" becomes "for now," "never again" becomes "not yet." Hours of grief. Seconds of relief. Each duration its own country. Tuesday lasting forever, Thursday disappearing entirely.

No authority could convey what the actually grieving know: How Tuesday's sorrow differs from Thursday's. How 3 PM hits different than 3 AM. How the same memory cuts or comforts depending on the light. Depending on the song playing, depending on who's asking.

Love without direction still needs to move. Through midnight Amazon purchases. Through starting fights about nothing. Through feeding strangers' parking meters. Love that speaks to empty rooms. Not madness but practice for conversations that can't happen.

Under this innocent spiritual goodness, every expression of loss has place. Your unhinged Google searches. Your perfectly normal-seeming Tuesday that was actually hell. Writing in actual ink about love with nowhere to land but everywhere to be.

Maybe we're all small vessels for what remains. Coffee cups holding pencils. Hearts holding texts. Bodies holding tomorrow.

Still learning carrying capacity isn't about size but willingness. Still discovering everyone has someone they can't delete from their phone. Still witnessing what remains when everything goes.
