Show Up

Words / 2026 Variety

What the opposition wants is simple: stay home.
Post things. Share an article. Add hashtags. Let your outrage live in the digital feed where it physically threatens nothing. The algorithm will bury these efforts by the next day. Your followers will finger through. The powerful will smile because you're exactly where they want you.
Donate if you feel guilty. Your job is to fund, not physically show up. Your job is to make your donations, feel good, and stay out of the way.
Your opponents don't want you to sit in a room where someone might ask what you can do next. They want you to keep your politics at a safe distance. Close enough to feel righteous, far enough to stay out of the picture.
They want your resistance to be awareness without action.
This is the ideal citizen of the failing nation: informed, uneasy, and immobilized.
This is the gap your opponents are counting on. The space between knowing something is wrong and actually doing something about it. They have filled this gap with distractions, with the lie that nothing will matter anyway.
Attendance is not the same as organizing. Attendance is showing up once. Organizing is showing up repeatedly and building something that shows up when we can't attend.
People come to a march hoping for something deeper than just being counted. They want to connect. They want relationships that outlast the event.
They want to understand how problems on their block connect to problems happening elsewhere on the planet.
Landlords raising rent here. A city being bombed there. The same logic of extraction. Same money moving through relative hands. Same disregard for life. Different distances.
Local issues are international issues. The line between them is thinner than we thought.
What happens in your city council is shaped by forces that cross borders. A trade deal affects a factory closing. A military budget affects a school budget. Money that doesn't go to healthcare goes somewhere else.
Be the one who finds out where it's ending up.
What happens across borders is shaped by what we accept at home.
The body in the room is what they fear. A group of bodies deciding together what to do next. A network of bodies showing up for each other when one body can't make it.
That's what organizing looks like. Not the march. The week after the march. The month after. The relationships that hold when the cameras leave.
Your opponents don't want you to sit in a room with people who might ask: What can we do this week? What can we build that outlasts this meeting?
They want you informed. They want you uneasy.
They don't want you in the room.
Show up.
A body in a chair.
A hand raised.
A voice.
