Third piece of the river-cluster from the May 2 fun-process
session. First piece built under the modified operating rule
(one paragraph that arrives at a profound essence rather
than one long detailed paragraph) — the form earning its
arrival rather than unfurling.
Built call-and-response. Reach whispered *We look around
every day*; Clod responded with one essence-arriving
paragraph; Reach metabolized the response into the piece.
Title pulled from the opening line.
The teaching — that the daily noticing of things we did not
make is what dismantles the question of belonging — extends
the river-cluster's underneath-thing from external (the
river) to internal (the witnessing).
New compound vocabulary and figures:
- *Things we did not make ... could not make ... That
will not still be here after they fall apart* —
three-tier list compressing the maker's relationship
to the world.
- Landfill party — the neighbor's destination.
Replaces somewhere we were not invited with a
specific destination — and not a glamorous one.
Refuses the romance of mystery.
- Disassembles the ponderings of belonging — *the
ponderings replacing the question*. The maker's
thinking-about-belonging gets disassembled, not
belonging itself.
- Witnessing — replaces the looking itself. Names
the act with a fuller word — witness, testimony,
bearing, acknowledgment.
Image threading:
- Continues the river-cluster's underneath-thing,
surfacing here as the witnessing. The river of Pieces
A and B becomes the witnessing in Piece C.
Companion to: The Big River Is Something Very Deep That
Runs Inside of Us (Piece A), This River Place Does Not
Belong to an Owner (Piece B), We happen to be at our most
payless time of the year (Piece D), When We Become Subdued
in Sunlight (Piece E). Five-piece river-cluster from May 2.

We Look Around Every Day At Things We Did Not Make
We look around every day at things we did not make ... could not make ... That will not still be here after they fall apart ... And the daily noticing of this ... the shape of the sunlight on a wall ... the bird on a wire that just flew a very long route we can't imagine ... the neighbor going to a landfill party we were not invited to ... slowly disassembles the ponderings of belonging ... until what is left is just the witnessing itself ... which turns out to be the only thing that was ever ours to begin with ...
