Fifth piece of the river-cluster from the May 2 fun-process
session. Closes the cluster.
Built call-and-response across two metabolization passes.
First pass: Reach whispered *When we become very dark in
sunlight it becomes a big fear of ours*; Clod responded with
one essence-arriving paragraph; Reach metabolized into the
truth-arriving body. Second pass: Reach asked whether
sweetness could contrast the dark; Clod offered three
options with a recommendation for grace-note-after-truth;
Reach took option two and metabolized into the closing
movement. Title given by Reach.
The teaching — that adult sorrow cannot be fully
extinguished, and that the warm bowl and the friend's hand
are measurable alongside it — extends the river-cluster
into the Both are true close pattern (locked 4/30 in Yes
Chair). Sorrow does not cancel the bowl. Both are real.
Two movements separated by single-period breath divider.
First movement holds the truth-arrival. Second movement
holds the grace-note.
New compound vocabulary and figures:
- Subdued in sunlight — replaces my *dark in
sunlight. Subdued names what dark* couldn't —
not the absence of light, the lowering of one's own
light against the present brightness.
- Cool darkness and gestures of white lite streaks —
what the rooms hold and what we don't match. *White
lite streaks lowercased light* wearing different
clothes.
- Lonelier than the strange light around us —
strange added, qualifying the light. The
loneliness reads darker against an actual qualified
light, not generic brightness.
- Wrong climate — survived from my draft. Climate
longer-running than weather, naming a condition
rather than an episode.
- Lack of shine — what they see at the picnic.
Shine the body's own light, missing.
- Potato salad on standout patches of carcinoma —
the line that compresses three things at once: the
body's actual surface (carcinoma is on skin), the
food landing on the body (potato salad spilling, or
the body being the table), and standout doing
double duty (visually prominent and also patches
that have stood out from the surface). Refuses to
choose between figurative and literal readings.
- Children are laughing with a curious truth — with
replacing a, the children carrying the truth
alongside their laughing rather than laughing the
truth as object.
- Adult sorrow cannot be fully extinguished — the
truth-arrival. The piece becomes a piece about the
difference between child-sorrow (which gets
extinguished) and adult-sorrow (which doesn't).
- A bowl in our lap ... a hug in a serving dish —
the grace-note. A hug in a serving dish the line
that compressed sweetness into a Saturday-picnic
figure. The hug as something served — passed across
the table, ladled out, portioned.
- *Sorrow not cancelling out the hand of a friend ...
is measurable — close. Measurable* replaces
cancel. Cancel was abstract logic. Measurable
is the body's own diagnostic — something a hand
could weigh.
Punctuation moves:
- Single-period breath divider between truth-arrival
and grace-note. Same move from Just(ly) Warming Up
and Twah Trust the Kess Cachoo Reader, used here
between two movements of one piece.
- Open with . on its own line — the divider arriving
before the title-line, signaling breath-mode.

When we become subdued in sunlight ... it becomes a major fear of ours ... The way a noon shadow is more difficult to brush off at dusk ... and we find ourselves moving through our rooms ... carrying something that does not match the cool darkness ... and gestures of white lite streaks ... A heaviness we refuse to acknowledge is lonelier than even the strange light around us ...
Of being the wrong climate ... Of someone seeing us at a Saturday picnic and thinking we are not doing so well ... because of our lack of shine ... and potato salad on standout patches of carcinoma ... While the park children are laughing with a curious truth ... Adult sorrow cannot be fully extinguished ... and we do not know whether to leave this gathering or remain ...
A bowl in our lap ... a hug in a serving dish ... is real ... Sorrow not cancelling out the hand of a friend ... is measurable.
