Eighth piece of the May 2 session.

Built call-and-response. Reach whispered *If we really tap
into how we see ourselves as that child in the sun free to
play*; Clod responded with one essence-arriving paragraph
reaching toward a recovery-of-the-buried-child figure;
Reach metabolized the response into the piece by refusing
the recovery-frame and replacing it with a labor-and-power
diagnosis. The child isn't free, isn't playing, is at work
— eating lunch underneath the sewing table.

The One repeats five times as anaphoric anchor. The
figure is genericized into a position rather than
romanticized into a body. The One could be any of the
children, not just one of memory.

Title — Who Is The One — open question as title, refuses
to answer who. The piece teaches by not answering its own
opening question.

New compound vocabulary and figures:

- The One — anaphoric position, repeated five times.
Refuses my draft's the child. Genericized figure.
- *Perspective assumptions of male colonial inherited
sediment* — threads sediment back from How Certain
Trauma Gets Recycled. Here the sediment gets
specified: male, colonial.
- Human landscape body — the body figured as a
landscape that humans inhabit. Body as place.
- *The exploited child at work is still there eating
their lunch underneath the sewing table* — the line
that refuses my draft's recovery-frame. Concrete,
specific, child-labor figure with a body and a
sandwich and a hidden place.
- Intersections of perception and power combined —
what covers over the One. Theoretical-register line
doing diagnostic work. Companion-piece (Traces of
Refusal Might Be the One) takes up the question of
whether this register-rupture is intentional craft or
the diagnostic requiring its own vocabulary.
- Surface beauty — what the practice of returning is
a practice of returning to. Different than my
recovering a lost self.
- Buried critical engagement — what the practice
accurately interprets. Theoretical register again.
- Discharge ourselves — close. Discharge doing
weapon-and-debt-and-illness work that perform
couldn't. We were taught how to fire ourselves off,
pay ourselves out, expel ourselves.

Two diagnostic moments where the read pulls and the
pulling is the piece teaching itself:

1. *Something inside it wanted to represent an
imperial bias* — reads as if the piece briefly puts
the colonial-bias inside the One rather than around
them. Companion-piece takes up this question
directly.
2. *Accurately interpreting buried critical
engagement* — body-images and theory-words sitting
at different elevations. Companion-piece takes up
this question directly.

Image threading:

- Sediment threads from How Certain Trauma Gets
Recycled (same session). Same inherited material,
different teaching.
- The May 2 session's interior-noticing-as-witnessing
thread continues.

Companion piece: Traces of Refusal Might Be the One
(same session) — metabolizes the diagnostic conversation
about this piece into a companion piece. Pair-thinking
running across the two.

Who Is The One

The One who didn't know about the perspective assumptions ... of male colonial inherited sediment ... The One whose human landscape body shifted odd ... because something inside it wanted to represent an imperial bias ... The One watching ... while we discover that the exploited child at work is still there eating their lunch underneath the sewing table ... The One not gone or lost ... just covered over by intersections of perception and power combined ... And the practice of returning to surface beauty is not about recovering our lost self ... but accurately interpreting buried critical engagement ... The One waiting in the shape of who we were before the outer world taught us how to discharge ourselves.
